Rolled into Los Angeles super early. Found a coffee shop that I could walk to that was open at 6am. Still forming some thoughts about this Amtrak trip… It was disappointing, and I think I’m done with Amtrak for a few years, which is unfortunate because I love trains. Just too many weird problems.

Union Station in Los Angeles is illuminated with purple and white lights, surrounded by tall palm trees.

@manton this is the basic assessment of all of my train friends who have taken long distance trips.

@rscottjones Yeah, it’s too bad. I want to love it. And sometimes I do, there will be a moment looking out the window that is beautiful and worth it, or some time to unplug and slow down.

@manton Sorry to hear that. Probably safer than flying right now!

@manton Welcome to LA, Manton! From Knoxville to LA!! You’ve now hit both my “hometowns” :) I was born here, but spent a load of my childhood there. Every big city has its flaws, but LA is great, especially this time of year because of the weather being mostly moderate. We live about 20 miles East and a bit South of Union Station. You can’t see me, but I’m waving hello!

@manton I hope the last leg, up through Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, is better for you. It’s at least a beautiful segment, even with any Amtrak problems.

@manton I’m sorry. I’ve never done Amtrak out west, but the Boston-DC route is really nice, esp. if you can book the Acela.

@darius Yeah, I am looking forward to the views. Hopefully will get a window on the Pacific side. 🤞

@newdawn I think the east coast is better managed / newer. Helps to have more business travelers, I bet.

@manton yep, so many biz travelers on the train when I take it.

@manton I’m first and foremost a road trip guy (I love the freedom to pull over and check out something unexpected), but in my experience, being on a train is a far more relaxing way of traveling than being on an airplane (too cramped) or driving yourself (which requires constant attention).
