I’m looking for some help/advice. I’d like to get back to reading articles, like news or science reports, more in-depth and thoughtfully. After years of fast-reading and skimming nearly every thing due to my workload I’m trying to do a reset. I’m finding it difficult. Any advice?

@ronguest I still really like Pocket. And their text to speech feature is nice too when in the car.

@ronguest Tough one...I’ll give it some thought.

@ronguest follow some smart and interesting people on pinboard. I discover so much just simply by following a few good people there. Really depends on your interest(s). Do you use the service? Otherwise Instapaper is quite good. You can also follow people there as well.

@ronguest I’m using Pocket now as a read it later service. I usually find articles throughout the day I want to read and save it. Then read them later on the commute home or on the weekend. Gabe Weatherhead of Macdrifter had a post earlier this year with some good RSS feeds: Some Feed Suggestions. I subscribed to the entire second section as well as the Pinboard popular feed Gabe mentions earlier in the post.

@bradbarrish @joshsullivan Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll look into those

@ronguest One thing that helps me is that every few months I unfollow everyone on Twitter/Micro.blog and RSS et. al and start fresh. I construct my subscriptions based on my goals. Sometimes that is creative inspiration, other times it is business savvy, other times about hiking/kaying, etc. I completely switch into those modes. It works for me.

@vasta Thanks, I like that idea. I used to use Pocket heavily but instead have automations that save things I want to read into Things3 for me. So settings items aside to read has been covered. The problem I have had is to avoid speeding through them unnecessarily. Taking some notes seems like a good way to slow down.

@ronguest @vasta I fell victim to reading too quickly when reading your post and completely missed the actual question. So to answer your question, for most articles, I print to PDF then read through once to get the gist of the piece while highlighting interesting sentences or paragraphs. Then I go back over and write notes down for anything that I highlighted. Recently I've been using LiquidText and taking notes in the PDF. Once done, I'll either save it to DEVONthink as a PDF or export the notes as a text file and link both files to each other in DEVONthink while tagging the notes for review. I review my DEVONthink databases on Sunday morning, and I read back through my notes and decide whether this might be a good source for research and tag/move appropriately. Hope that helps!

@vasta do you take notes within the app as you go, or someplace else?

@Kordumb @vasta

If it helps I read in feedly anything I highlight is grabbed and posted into a Dropbox text file with link and attribution all via ifttt

I periodically go into that folder and if it still resonates will likely write something around it and drop into blot ... the time gap allows me to purge ... a lot

@ronguest niche solution- move house and fight with internet company for several months to get service - will get you through your pocket backlog no problem 👍 More practically I use Nuzzel to see what interesting people from twitter are reading without having the app installed

@JohnPhilpin that's a neat workflow. I use Feedbin/Unread on iOS right now, but I think something simar would work with Instapaper as well.

@vasta that's what I've wanted to do and I have a million notebooks sitting around, but between reading on the go and reading on the couch, it feels like a hassle to have a notebook too.. I do want to encourage a more focused approach for myself when reading as well.

@JohnPhilpin @Kordumb @vasta IFTTT is the secret ingredient. I read content in Instapaper and my notes & highlights from Instapaper are grabbed by an IFTTT applet and dumped in to Evernote.

@vasta The interesting aspect of the suggestion is for some very specific content I do this (important posts on finance and investing). For those I print them to PDF on my iPad then use markup to highlight key points. Finally I will write up the most important ones in a Field Notes notebook. I just never thought to apply something like that to other realms.
