I do occasional dog-walking gigs as a hobby. I love dogs, I don’t have one of my own, and it gets me outdoors for some fresh air and exercise. Yesterday, I was bitten several times by my charge, a 9 month old pit bull mix. I’ve been walking him twice a week for a month now. He has a swe... micro.welltempered.net

@jean Ow, sorry to hear this. Traumatic for sure. I hope you heal up well, inside and out.

I know pit bulls have their fervent defenders, but I'm not at all convinced. I wouldn't get one, and don't like to see them anywhere near children. As with people who think they have a 'friendly' relationship with a wild animal until it turns on them, it's very hard or impossible to know what the attack trigger will be.

@jean Such a terrible feeling. I have also been a dog lover since growing up with one as part of our family. A few years ago, I was bitten by a dog who inexplicably bolted from the front door of a townhouse as I was walking home. Definitely shook me but eventually I got over it.

@jean Last year, I tried to adopt a Saint Bernard who had been rescued from bad situation. He was a favorite at the shelter, and within that controlled environment, he was perfectly behaved. But within a week with me he became very protective, then aggressive. He was terrified of the world, and attacked two of my neighbors on one walk. I had to take him back, because I didn't have the tools to help him. Hurt for a long time.

@jean That’s a horrible experience! I hope it doesn’t hinder you from your dog-walking routine forever. I was weary of dogs since I was little and got bitten by an old, retired police dog. It took until 2016 before I really loved a dog, as a lady that works here had a loving Parson-Russel terrier that switched it for me. I hope you reconnect with the stable dogs again soon, so your relationship with dogs aren’t broken. I hope you’ll mend quickly. ❤️

@jean we’ve been dog stewards for a long, long time. Gone through many iterations of pack. One thing I have learned is that any dog will bite no matter how generally sweet or reliable. We had one dog that drew blood from every one of us. It almost was a family initiation ritual. That dog was pretty sweet most of the time, but under certain circumstances, mostly food he found, he would bite. That dog ate so many chicken bones found on the street. You could not take one away from him without drawing back a bloody stump. We learned his triggers and didn’t pull them.

It’s also possible the dog you were walking wasn’t feeling well or was in pain for some reason. That can turn an otherwise seeet dog nasty.

It’s an awful experience to have a dog turn on you and so sad you had it after so many years of good relationships with dogs. I hope you do get back in the saddle again.

@JMaxB It isn't that much about the type of dog, but more about mad breeding practices that cause dogs that suddenly react like that. There are people who react in similar fashion when they're scared and insecure, that doesn't mean all of us are like that
