August 15, 1959: my parents got married. They had dated for a few months. The wedding was held in my grandparents’ house in Miami.

In August in a house with no air conditioning. Today I smile when I think that they must have been really eager to start married life. 💞

Black and white photo of woman in a light suit and hat, holding a travel bag, man behind here in a dark suit with a buttoniere.

@jean Such a nice photo! Back then even with no air conditioning it probably wasn't as bad as it is now.

@jean My dad was a rising senior at South Dade HS (new to the school, his stepdad relocated from Jax Naval Air Station) in '59. Base housing with no A/C. I have never been able to wrap my head around it. 🥵🥵

@jean happy anniversary to your parents and by extension you. They seem really happy on that photo. I hope they had a fulfilling marriage.

@richText I went to Ojus Elementary and JFK Junior High. It was a big deal for the PTA to raise money to air-condition the classrooms. The classrooms that were cool were so much easier to work in. Then I went to a brand new high school, North Miami Beach, which was built with central air… and no windows, presumably to cut down on the electrical costs. Four years in an enormous concrete cave. I think they discontinued that architectural innovation not long after.

@AlexKucera Thanks! They did. 40 years, before my mother passed away in 2000.
