Micro.blog bookmarks are a significant part of my workflow now. I have over 1000 bookmarks stored, mostly web pages that Micro.blog will also archive, and enough tags to filter through them. Probably about time to import my old Pinboard and Instapaper bookmarks.

@manton do you have any blog posts on how you (or others) use bookmarks? I haven’t really found a reason to use it yet, but I’m interested!

@7robots I don’t think I have a good blog post, but the basics are in this video on YouTube that I recorded a while back. I’ll have to work on an update.

@manton, is there a way to import Pocket bookmarks into Micro.blog like you mentioned for Pinboard and Instapaper?

@mlm361 Yes! Click Bookmarks → “..” → Import. Pocket is one of the choices.

@manton Thanks will definitely check that out :). Sorry should have checked first before I asked.

@mlm361 No worries, happy to help! Many of the features around bookmarks and highlights are quite buried. (And some our only visible with Micro.blog Premium.)

@manton I think Pocket has changed the export mode I went through everything and they gave me a zip file with a csv file. There was not a choice. I used the export link you have too.

@manton Thank you for sharing this. You reminded me of some of the features in Micro.blog bookmarks that I liked, even if I wasn’t sure it would replace my older bookmarking tool. Do you have plans to restore the Chrome extension? EDIT I found the Github repo with the Chrome/Firefox extension.

@manton As you know, I’ve been working on migrating a ton of Pinboard bookmarks maybe over to Micro.blog. I was wondering though — will I get archived versions for those previously-saved links? Would I maybe in the future at some point?

@willtmonroe Hmm, did the extension get removed from the Chrome extension store? I hadn’t realized. I use the extension all the time.

@incanus Remind me about how many bookmarks you have? I was worried about archiving imported bookmarks because the size is kind of unpredictable. I’m happy to manually run the archiving in the background, though, maybe over a longer period of time.

@manton What about exportability?

@markstoneman Export is there. You can export bookmarks as HTML or CSV.

@manton Yes, it was removed. I tried using the link in Micro.blog Help and then searching for “micro.blog” with no results.

But the GitHub zip, once extracted, worked just fine.

@manton I haven’t moved them over yet, but I’m at about 15,000.

@incanus @manton I don’t understand what you all are using bookmarks for that you have so many?

@manton ready for my 15,529 links from Pinboard archive? 😊🤪

@cheesemaker @incanus I assume this is over many years. So maybe a few bookmarks a day and then 10 years later you’re talking about real numbers.

@manton Any plan to add a Safari extension to the Mac/iOS apps for bookmarks?

@7robots I was coming to ask this same question and I bookmarked @manton’s answer 😂

@Mtt That would be nice, but I just use the bookmarklet for now. I know it’s nowhere near as easy to float an extension for Safari as it is for FF or Chrome, which is annoying, but I also understand why they do it that way.

@Mtt The iOS app has it already. If you share from Safari, there will be a Save Bookmark option instead of creating a blog post. I want to add this to the Mac too.

@manton @cheesemaker Yeah this is Del.icio.us (for which I used to develop a client), migrated to Pinboard, now looking into Micro.blog. Started in ~2004. Pages that I want to save for posterity, have written comments on, tagged, and in some cases, display on my site (https://justinmiller.io/links).

@markstoneman I’m not sure I understand the question. Exporting the archived contents of web pages? They are stored publicly on S3 so that they are partially independent from Micro.blog’s platform. But they aren’t included in any export, they’d have to be copied separately.

@thosch It doesn’t check duplicates. We might be able to change it to do that… I’ll look into Raindrop sync too.

@manton I’d love it if the iPad app had a better reading experience. The highlights feature doesn’t show up consistently and things like a choice of fonts would make a big difference.

@scivias Thanks for the feedback. The highlights depends on Micro.blog being able to download a copy of the web page… If you have any sites that don’t work, let me know and I can test with those.

@manton Thanks for getting back to me. It isn’t an issue with micro.blog reading the website (it does) it’s an issue with the apps. They allow you to save highlights but they then don’t show in the UI at all. Highlights don’t show on the article reading page and there’s no link to show highlights.

@manton A video probably makes it clearer. On the iPad app I can save a highlight but there’s no way that I’ve found to see it in app. When I switch to the web it is there. My preference would be for the highlight to show on the text itself which isn’t possible on the web either.

@scivias Ah, I understand now. We have started moving the highlights features into our separate app for notes and highlights, Strata. I think we may have removed a little too much from the main app for now. I’ll take another look at this and see what we can do.
