@kaa As a fellow “The Archive" user, I was curious what you use to preview your writing/notes that you produce in The Archive (if you do)? I currently use Typora, it's on-the-fly formatting works well for me for previewing, though it does not use MultiMarkdown.

@crossingthethreshold @kaa I use Typora mostly because i have lots of tables and they look nicer. I also have “table flip” in the mix to edit them. But I’ve been toying with the idea of pointing Marked at my notes folder.

@crossingthethreshold yeah that’s a good question. See I don’t use The Archive for that for that sort of thing. I use it to take notes about everything and everything, but not as a place for longer pieces that I care about what they ultimately look like - for that I have always relied on iA Writer. I imagine Marked would be the best bet for that sort of thing, although MultiMarkdown Composer is another solid app as well.

@kaa You make a good point. It seems that we have a similar setup. I also use iA Writer for my main writing. The Archive is likewise my catch all for notes. Some of them are longer quotes and there are times when I like to read them free of the Markdown markups that I've added. That's when I open them in Typora. I have tried Marked, but while a solid app, it is more than I need. On reflection since I wrote my original question to you, I think that I am happy with the setup that I have.

Thank you for offering your thoughts.

@crossingthethreshold @kaa sorry for the intrusion in the conversation but I’m curious as what your thoughts are. Why iA Writer over , lets say, Ulysses?

@seishonagon I have tried Marked a couple of times but have decided that it is really more than I need. Typora for now fits the bill if I need to read my notes elsewhere. I'm interested that you are using Table Flip. I don't use tables often, but might give it a look, especially as it is another of Christian's projects.

@Gabz @kaa Thanks for asking. I have used both iA Writer and Ulysses since the early days of both development. The main thing that had me decide on iA Writer was plain text files. I have easy access to all of my writing and if I want to, I can open the files with pretty much anything that accepts plain text. That's important to me.

I am also aware that I can get side tracked by things like playing around with themes. For me iA Writer just allows me to focus on the writing.

Having said that, a couple of things that I miss from Ulysses are:
- having a place "in app" to put clippings or notes for a piece that I am working on. Right now they have to go somewhere else, or are highlighted in some way in what I am working on. - sometimes I find the white background of iA Writer too bright and the dark theme too dark. I'd like something in between. A third option.

@Gabz @kaa Having said what I said about wanting a third theme option in iA Writer, if my eyes do get tired, I simply hop over to Typora, open the file in that app and use a theme that is easier on my eyes. But most of my writing still happens in iA Writer.

@crossingthethreshold @Gabz iA just hits the right notes for me. So far it's a company that has done the right moves (except the Dropbox integration thing on iOS that I still don't understand). Not having many options (fonts/colours/etc) is part of their feature. They have a strong opinion about things and generally I agree with them. When I want something more flexibile I go into something like Highland or Sublime Editor (or my recent favourite web text editor, Brackets).

@kaa @crossingthethreshold Thank you, I have been on the fence between text editors these days. Specifically between iA Writer and Ulysses

@Gabz don’t get me started!

I have iaWriter AND Ulysses - and simply cannot stick with one over the other ... REALLY annoying (today's first world problem)

@JohnPhilpin @kaa @crossingthethreshold what’s funny tho, it’s that no matter which I usually use Drafts for my writing, either Ulysses or iA Writer would be for long time storage.

@Gabz oh yes - forgot about Drafts - which is THE place where most of it starts - great for capturing on the fly on phone and mac - and then it moves to where it is going to be finished ... which is rarely in drafts

@crossingthethreshold i actually edit in Typora. Sometimes and keep The Archive for the indexing and search. IIRC Table Flip is not cheap, but frankly worth it. I maintain a few “reference tables” in my notes and would be lost without it. Hopefully at point The Archive and TF will tightly integrate ...

@seishonagon Did you know that Typora offers a way for creating tables….once it recognizes that they are being created? I don't use tables often and only just discovered that. I played with Table Flip, but for now I plan on sticking with that feature.
