Watching the Substack drama unfold but just taking notes for now. Trying to put most of my writing time into book editing, and these big picture topics of indie blogs, newsletters, and moderation fit right in.
@manton After reading the linked post I thought I’d read the comments in response—and what do I find but a bunch of bomb-throwing. Once again, thankful for the relative peacefulness at micro.blog.
@manton While not unimportant, it still is a typical tempest in a tea cup. The less there’s at stake, the more heated the debate is, as often is the case. It also reminded me of the statement:
> Never, ever read the comments
It often isn’t a fair representation of a community, because mostly people who feel passionate enough in that moment do offer their opinions. In the comment section, the discussion soon devolved in theoretical discussions about political views. If commenters want to (mis)use their right to debate in that manner, I’m out. IOW, I stopped reading further comments. Ugh!
@renevanbelzen I also expect some of the comments were from people who don’t typically participate in the Substack community, but they saw the headlines and clicked over to the thread to make their argument.
