The Cal Newport New Yorker article is now on Techmeme so @manton better expect a lot of sign-ups in the next few days. Hopefully some stick around.

@pratik Yikes! It might get even busier around here.

@simonwoods I'm hoping the paywall keeps the trolls out.

@pratik I think trolls can come and go, that's fine, it's a part of the fabric of the internet. On the other hand, bot farms are a hell of a thing; in this instance I am hopeful the paywall has a substantial effect, since they make very little sense to produce and maintain if each bot costs $5.

@simonwoods @pratik Also, we have a good community and the superpowers of @macgenie as a troll firewall. Strictly enforced community guidelines are great in theory, hopefully they’ll be great in practice too. Maybe a facility of having a pool of m.b users who are willing to jump in and help with @macgenie's roll when there's big traffic increases?

@simonwoods True. But somehow I rather M.B. be full of people and not brands. I know plenty of people prefer the customer service support on Twitter but brands and companies pretending to be people is infuriating and has more downsides, IMO.

@yorrike et al. Please @mention me and email me (jean@micro.blog) if you spot any behavior that’s concerning. We will uphold the standards that make our community what it is.

@pratik There is no re-blog, no algorithm at play with suggested posts, trends, anything like that... even search is limited. Even if brands appear (that's a BIG if since their existence on other platforms are based on tools such as the ones I just mentioned) there is no way for it to intrude on your timeline.

The teams has and continues to build the platform in a way that it's difficult to even start spammy behaviour, let alone continue with it in such a way as to intrude on other people's space. This is fundamental to Micro.blog, it's exactly why you don't see the words friends and family thrown around in that soulless, VC-backed Big Tech kinda way.

@simonwoods Yes, I certainly hope that it stays the course. That's why I spend more time here than on any other community.

@simonwoods and all. Reading this thread made me think that we were all in a space ship getting ready for a battle of sorts. One which we would definitely win with teamwork and truth! Thanks everyone. It's lovely to be here with all you happy stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️
