Total lunar eclipse Nov 8, 2022.
@Miraz Was the moon eclipsed when it rose in your sky? Did you watch it come out of eclipse over the evening/night? I think I have to visit the Southern hemisphere one of these days to get a good idea about how different the sky and the Moon looks from there.
@parag We were lucky. The full moon rose at sunset around 8 pm and then partial began at around 10 pm. By 11 pm we could really see things starting to happen. I watched until midnight for totality then went to bed. It was a perfect night and an amazing and wonderful sight.
@Miraz Excellent!!! So, did you observe the eclipse start at the top of the Moon or bottom? For us it started at around 12o’clock position on the moon.
@parag The first part to go dark was around 5 o' clock. The last remaining light was around 11 o' clock position. And, being in the Southern Hemisphere, the Moon (and everything else) rises on the right-hand if facing north and then moves left to set on the left hand. Movies that show sped up moonrises and sets usually cater to the northern hemisphere and show it travelling the "wrong" way, from left to right. 😀
@Miraz Wow, I had no idea it was different in the Northern Hemisphere. I just assumed that the moon travelled across the sky in the same direction as the sun, but apparently that's not the case up there.
@jean Sorryyyyy… Still rises in the East and sets in the West though, so you're cool there. 😀
@lmika They still both go east to west but if you're facing north the direction of travel appears different. Imagine an analogue clock embedded in a vertical pane of glass. The hands go from left to right via up from one side of the glass. From the other side they go from right to left via up.
@lmika Perhaps more clear would be to say: face the Sun or Moon as it rises. Now, does it veer left or right? Here, watch the moon go the 'wrong' way (15 seconds): www.youtube.com/watch
@jean The moon is over the equator so you and I need to face south to watch it, but Miraz has to face north. That means we watch it go left to right; she watches it go right to left.
