Seth Godin has some thoughts on Mastodon.

I shall go on record and say I don’t really get Mastodon and don’t really have the motivation to. I have a blog. I have email. I’m on Micro.blog. These are my social media. Everything else must prove equal to these or they’re not for me.

@patrickrhone you could just think of/treat Mastodon as an extension to micro.blog given the amazing integration by @manton

@patrickrhone Ditto. Email, newsletter, & Micro.blog are Me Online. I want to keep it that way, except when I dream about reducing even further.

@alanralph @patrickrhone @JMaxB ... and that's just online. My wife and I also enjoy newspapers, magazines, and are lucky enough to live in a community in which you can talk to one another about all sorts of issues casually and via a number of dedicated groups.

I'm happy that people have an increasing number of alternatives to the corporate web, however I am very happy here. Micro.blog is my social timeline.

@Troydp Same. Plus, it's one more thing for me to figure out and doesn't seem worth the time cost.

@jpayne Perhaps, but even that I would have to spend time to figure out and set up and I've not been convinced of the value of spending that time/effort.

@SimonWoods The Sunday NYT, Wired, and my local public radio station for me. I also live in a community of generous and friendly neighbors. We even have a neighborhood listserve.

@patrickrhone A community listserve? That sounds great!

@odd It is. Need to see if someone has a particular tool you can borrow? Email the listserve. Lost dog in the neighborhood? Email the listserve. Need recommendations for service providers for just about anything imaginable? Email the listserve.

It's fantastic.

@patrickrhone This community listserve is sheer brilliance. I’ve lived in some great communities through the course of my life that desperately could’ve used this.

@pimoore It's been running for over 20 years now.

@patrickrhone The reason I tuned out of other socials: too many inputs. It's mentally (and emotionally) overwhelming, doesn't make my life better, and me knowing about all the things doesn't make the world better. I decided I want to know less, and discuss more. Fewer but deeper connections. Microblog's perfect for that.

@pimoore The village down the road from us has an active listserve. Our own village has a very active community Facebook group. Both are tremendously useful to their communities, though of course I prefer the listserve approach.

@JMaxB I live in a condo, so this seems like the perfect setting for something like this. Only problem is there are some sketchy people in my building, so I’m not convinced I want to communicate with them. 😂

@alanralph The value of Mastodon lies in two groups; people you know who are there, or a niche community. That niche can be writers, devs, artists, fandom, hobbies . . . birders are flocking and sharing species locations

@Medievalist I see MB as quiet and calm. Mastodon is louder and edgier and that’s fine. One can find their niche.

Twitter is more like a block party with no security.

@patrickrhone A listserve is exactly the type of thing I'm looking to join/establish. At the moment I'm in the midst of growing my list of trusted publications; currently The Economist and Private Eye are my only firm choices, although the former is quite expensive so it's an item on my long-term wishlist.
