We’ve been trying Basecamp again for Micro.blog planning and documents. So far so good. I was a big fan of Basecamp in the early years, and really admire how they’ve managed to improve it without adding clutter.

@manton Awesome! I've been using Basecamp Personal for my businesses and while it's just me for both, it's given me a place to "think out loud" and write comments to myself which is a great way, should I forget, to go back and see why I decided to do one thing or another.

Curious if you think Basecamp might be interesting for the community here as well? I hop into the Slack once in a while but on the whole I find Slack very ovewhelming and hard to follow. That said, I don't work in any field that requires me to use it much, so I'm not exactly an ace at it. (The bias then, is that I find Basecamp so far to be a lot easier to navigate, especially from the sheer dearth of visual noise compared to Slack.)

@philly We've been thinking for a while about moving away from Slack. I love Slack, but it's not a perfect fit for helping customers because we don't have full search history. Discourse is another option for public forums.

@manton I'm a huge Discourse fan and would be a massive advocate of it if you were looking to go in that direction.

@manton I believe both Mac Power Users and Mac Geek Gab are using Discourse with good success.

@manton Switched to it for TIL and immediately became less stressed. Find it a lot easier to build ideas, and especially an accurate schedule.

@manton Why not self-hosted Discourse?

Or some subset of micro.blog itself?

@Manton Also, lately I’ve been rediscovering the awesomeness of email. How about a mailing list?

@MitchWagner The nice thing about Discourse is I'm pretty sure we can extend it to allow signing in with Micro.blog accounts. I'd want to test a few things before deciding, though.

@manton That's definitely possible! Happy to help with that, it should be a pretty minor change to your IndieAuth provider code.

@aaronpk Thanks! That's what I was hoping. Hopefully I can set aside some time to work on it soon-ish.

@manton we use the free edition of Basecamp to manage our family. I like it but wish they’d offer a mid-tier paid option. I’d snap it up.

@manton That would be lovely. I haven’t checked the Slack channel just because ... well, I don’t know why.

Why not have the discussion hosted on micro.blog? I’m not sure how that would work — micro.blog isn’t configured for multiple channels. And that may be the answer to my own question.

@manton What about a payed Slack? That would give you full search history?

@flowinho Slack charges per user and we have a lot of people who have joined our Slack, so it would cost thousands of dollars per month. Not really suited to how we use it.
