šŸ˜¤ Woke up, decided to check M.b. Maybe I missed something. Turns out that, predictably, Micro.blog has not been sending me notifications for days. Again!

These are notifications of people commenting! People who get no reply. Mastodon manages that. So does Bluesky. Threads too! Is it that hard?

@maique the other day, @vladcampos replied to me, but I never received the mention. It doesnā€™t appear in the @-mentions on Micro.blog or on Mastodon. The only reason I saw his comment is that I follow him on Micro.blog and happened to open the platform that day to browse. Otherwise, I would have missed his message.

@otaviocc Itā€™s so frustrating. And now we even get all the mentions from mastodon and Bluesky, and none of the notifications? Brilliant.

@maique unfortunately it is issues like this that will eventually drive long time users away. Issues that have been going on for years and one of the things expected from any app or service.

@maique itā€™s so frustrating when a basic function like this regularly doesnā€™t work. So many little things randomly fail or stop working and then just as randomly start again. My Bluesky cross posting hasnā€™t worked for two days now.

@gregmorris It is. Right on point, these arenā€™t showing up either. And even the post had to be manually triggered, it wouldnā€™t even show up on the blog.

@peterw It is. Unfortunately, it's happening very often these days. I've started using EchoFeed for the cross posting of the blog, and M.b is basically hosting the blog, and nothing else. The one thing I miss, the community. I fully understand not everyone wants to join Mastodon, or Bluesky, but many have. I'm happy I still get to keep in touch that way.

@adders They work sometimes, usually after a re-install of the app, but quickly fall over again.

@gregmorris @maique Just yesterday @Manton ended a post on his blog with this "Iā€™m also more than guilty of working on fun diversions away from my productā€™s core features." On the one hand, new features are nice but it does seem as though Micro.blog has an ongoing reliability problem. I see quite a few threads like this one, several a month along side of the time line failing to update, sometimes for hours at a time.

I'm still rooting for micro.blog and check in almost daily but I have shifted more of my time and attention elswhere. ā€‹

@Denny Completely agree. I was expecting things to change due to the responses to the user survey pointing to these kinds of issues with reliability. But alas, a new front page and book covers in the timeline are considered more important. I get it, new things are cool and ensuring reliability is boring work.

I don' pretend to know how to run a social platform, Manton does, but I think it's getting untenable for a lot of users. ā€‹I really appreciate micro.blog, I really do, and i think thats why I hate to see these kinds of 'basic' issues.

@Denny @gregmorris @maique I have many similar thoughtsā€¦

ā€‹The core product of Micro.blog has so many things going for it ā€“ but it also desperately needs polish. This just makes it so wild that they spend precious dev time on things like Notes, which are extremely well served by the market, instead of focusing on what makes the service unique.

@Denny @gregmorris @maique I added that line at the end just to soften my criticism of Mastodon. People have been asking for something like the book cover previews for years, over and over. It's okay if not everyone uses that feature but I know a lot of people wanted it.

@Denny By now Iā€™m just rooting for reliable hosting, and even that feels shaky these days. Had problems again today, and itā€™s been months since a feed I have being imported does so without a manual trigger. I have moved everything else.

@gregmorris @maique @Denny Count me in as someone frustrated by the basics falling down. I so want Micro.blog to succeed, but even the advocate that I am, the reliability and polish issues scare me off from migrating my full blog over.

@manton All of them, really. I get no notifications. They show up from time to time, but nothing shows up for weeks. I also keep having issues (in the sense that it doesnā€™t work at all) with a Letterboxd feed. It needs to be pulled manually, and the post edited manually as well, when it finally shows up on the posts list.

Feels like too many pieces are broken, and these are just the ones I still have turned on. All others are now being handled somewhere else, with no issues, Iā€™m sorry to say.

I do appreciate you building this, and keeping it going, but itā€™s not getting better, sir. It was much more reliable when it had less features. A lot more.

@maique Sorry to hear it. I feel like feeds are more reliable right now but clearly I must be missing some things. I see other Letterboxd items showing up in people's feeds so I'm digging into why yours isn't working.

@maique I've turned off notifications now and rely only on Mastodon where I crosspost. I check Micro.blog's mentions few times a day depending on how busy I am. So my replies to others, contrary to before, are much delayed.

@odd Unfortunately Iā€™m echoing these sentiments. I want desperately for micro.blog to be my forever home for POSSEing all the things, especially now that we have mainstream normies flocking to Bluesky, even looking again at Mastodon/Fediverse anf Threads about to finally seal the deal with 2 way federation. Itā€™s all about the open API and hackability without the overhead Iā€™ll be facing with a DIY hosting solutionā€¦ I need notifications and Iā€™m sure I could create a hack with RSS that would do it, but I shouldnā€™t have to if thereā€™s an app already, right?

@starrwulfe RSS and Mastodon mostly. Bluesky a little bit, not sure I'll stick with that.

ā€‹I quit Facebook in 2015, stopped posting to Instagram a couple years ago and finally closed it and Threads accounts last week.

@Denny Fair enough.

I'm hoping the bridge is good enough by the time things get cooking over there so I can just cherry pick accounts and follow from here (or wherever I carry this account's URL to next; same with Bluesky really... Although I do like Bluesky a lot)ā€‹

@starrwulfe Yes, exactly! Now, personally I have disabled notifications, (because sometimes thereā€™s just too much), but I often check my replies. I wish it had been the only issue. I think thereā€™s at least got to be a trustee or two, who can deploy changes (emergency bug fixes, restarting servers, etc. around the world), because like the other day, when the timeline wasnā€™t updated for 4-5 hours, it seems like nobody cares. I know they do, but itā€™s a reliability issue. I think I need to stop harping on about this, but I feel like something has got to be done.
