With Threads hitting 80 million users already, a lot of folks are dismissing Bluesky. But maybe it’s more important than ever for Bluesky to succeed. Or pivot slightly and implement enough of ActivityPub to co-exist? Micro.blog already cross-posts to Bluesky and I haven’t ruled out full federation.

@manton care to explain what you mean by full federation? Implementing all of ActivityPub?

@manton I think people are writing it off because for so many it’s theoretical. You can use threads now, and a ton of other people are using it. Unless you were part of a comparatively small sign up group, you can’t even see what’s on bluesky.

@manton sorry if you’ve answered this already but will you offer cross posts to Threads (and maybe federation) or are you strictly against this? It seems like micro.blog has been platform agnostic

@indw No, full federation with the AT Protocol that Bluesky uses. I already support full ActivityPub federation. So basically following people on Bluesky or Mastodon from one interface.

@FreezePeach I'm not against it. Unfortunately I don't think Threads is going to allow cross-posting. If they do, I'll support it immediately. You're right that our approach is supporting any platform that fits with the open web.

@manton odd if they’ve made statements against cross posting if they are paying lip service to federation

@FreezePeach To be fair, they haven't made statements. I just have low expectations based on how difficult it is to have automated posting into Instagram and Facebook. They could support federation without allowing third-party clients, for example.

@manton very hard to get excited about being tied to another thing from Meta.

@manton Bluesky and others like T2 will be a niche, as will Mastodon and micro.blog. They all have a passionate user base. None of the smaller players will compete with Meta, but we’ll all thrive AS LONG AS inter-op and federation are a part of the equation between each other AND Threads.

No single service should own social.

@manton I’d love to see full federation. Connect all the things!

@manton Micro.blog does not implement all of ActivityPub, which is why I asked.

@indw Anything in particular you're thinking of that we haven't implemented? I feel like all the important stuff is there, but happy to be proven wrong if I've overlooked something.

@manton Federation with Bluesky would be 💯. If Threads actually implements ActivityPub, the I could get what I need from government and political “Twitter” without leaving Micro.blog.

@manton As you well know, quantity isn't everything. Big services attract big social problems, not always solvable with automation, or even a fleet of moderators. Bad actors love bigger megaphones, especially adversarial state actors, since Americans will no doubt be the majority of active users.

@manton oh, I don’t need anything more from your service or out of ActivityPub, I just didn’t know if you were saying you were planning on changing something with the current setup. Exciting times.
