I’ve been saying for a while that the fediverse will likely evolve to having maybe 10 medium-sized platforms, not 1000+ small servers. It won’t be a failure if Threads is one of those. It’s still much better than a single platform with a billion users.

@z428 I think skepticism is called for. This is going to be disruptive. But I disagree with folks wanting to block Meta from the fediverse. That goes against our principles of openness.

@manton I like this take.

@manton @z428 I think the Mastodon project’s thoughts are valid here:

> …where we would end up is exactly where we are now. XMPP did not exist on its own outside of nerd circles, while ActivityPub enjoys the support and brand recognition of Mastodon.

@oddevan @z428 I pretty much agree with that. I think the comparisons with XMPP have been overblown. Messaging is also by nature ephemeral and (in my opinion) much less important to get right.

@z428 It’s certainly a concern but I think users are much more aware now of the problems with massive centralized platforms, especially Facebook! To be clear, I don’t recommend anyone use Threads for online identity, except to experiment with. The value is in when it connects to other platforms.
