@DazeEnd @jean You remember correctly. We changed it just about a month ago. What we came up with is 300 characters, or 600 characters if there is a block quote, to make sure there's a little more room. I blogged more about the thinking here. I personally think Mastodon's 500 is a little too long for quick browsing of the timeline... Might as well make it a full-length blog post then.
@manton I think a 300 char is a good balance. Has that increased limit made it into the clients yet? I still see a 280 char limit on iOS. Or do I need to change a setting somewhere?
@DazeEnd Oh yeah, unfortunately the old iOS app is out of sync with everything else... Decided not to update it because the new 3.0 version (a completely rewrite) will be shipping fairly soon.
@manton Suggestion: If the post is longer than 300 characters - and there is no title - and no blockquote - and the post is more than one paragraph - and the first paragraph is under 300 characters
Then post just the first paragraph on the timeline, masto, and twitter, with a link back for the rest.
Would make the timeline cleaner and more skimmable.
