The New York Times is in talks to acquire Letterboxd. We need more movie and book reviews published on indie blogs. This is a pretty easy thing to decentralize because the network effects aren’t as strong as on other kinds of social silos.

@manton What we need are more actual educated critics. They want to acquire Letterboxd so they can fire all their movie critics. Crowdsourced reviews of any kind are virtually worthless.

@drwalt I hadn’t thought about how it will relate to traditional reviewers. I figured it was an expansion similar to what they did with their online games empire.

@manton My college roommate, Michael Phillips, was a professional movie critic who had his job with the Chicago Tribune eliminated because movies were no longer buying newspaper ads. That’s the level of thought. Film, theater, and music critics are being eliminated at an alarming rate, and Letterboxd is not an equal substitute.

@jimmylittle @caseyliss Posting to a blog directly from Callsheet would be cool. I just tested sharing to Micro.blog and actually this could be better on our side. I’ll improve it.
