Upgrading my 13 Pro to a 16 Pro.
@jsonbecker yeah. I used to be an upgrade-every-year person to being on the fence about even giving up my 13 this year.
I think my dream is ultimately to go flip phone and back to a dedicated camera, but it’s still hard to decouple iPhone from my life at the moment.
@keenan What would your ideal dedicated camera be?
I'm in a similar boat - tired of ginormous phones - very much considering a flip phone + compact camera such as a Ricoh GR III.
Realistically, though, as a former photographer who carried around a heavy bag with a DSLR and half dozen lenses for years, an iPhone Pro takes good enough pictures for how convenient it is.
@brbcoding that’s the dance with the devil I do right now. I love, *love* the convenience of iPhone photography. I just hate basically everything else about the phone and how powerless I feel using it.
I think, ideally, I have a camera that gives me similar portability in a small body. But I definitely want something with a flexible zoom without worrying about lenses. I’ve always had DSLRs that end up collecting dust because I don’t want to carry all the *stuff.*
@keenan Moving on from my 13 mini is giving me literal heartache. I'm excited about the new features and battery life, but I'm somewhat dreading going back to a massive and heavy phone. And leaving behind this objectively gorgeous color. 😢
@jarrod god, I do love that mini size. Always been jealous of my wife’s phone. I wish I wasn’t so obsessed with the camera modules.
@jarrod I'm going through the same with my 12 mini. Was trying to hold onto it as long as I could, but the clicky noise whenever the camera tries and fails to focus on anything is the last straw, sadly.
@jarrod I’ve also got the red iPhone 13 mini, and my plan is to keep on using it for another 3 years. I’ve got no need to upgrade.
@petebrown Oh boy, that doesn't sound good. Mine has been pretty rock solid, except battery life is lacking (despite a battery replacement last year) and now one button is a little mushy.
@keenan every time I hear someone say that I really wonder what they mean. I can’t tell if I just have a different relationship with my phone or if people are imagining what their relationship is like.
@keenan if I had a podcast this is something I’d want to talk to people about.
@jsonbecker If you had a podcast, this is something I would want to talk to you about on it.
@jsonbecker I just think my relationship with technology has become more fraught over the years. The more central it becomes to my life, the more I resent it. There are times where I just want to throw everything into the ocean and communicate solely via carrier pigeon.
But I still need 2FA for my bank (and I have a hard time not poking the anxiety bear with doomscrolling).
@keenan Do you feel that the 16 Pro fixes some of those issues for you with the camera button and advanced camera controls? I'm happy they finally decided to put the same camera array on the smaller Pro.
@jarrod Apple recently made the mini 13 available on their refurbished site, I pouced (thankfully they sold out in minutes) and transitioned from my 13 Pro Max to the 13 mini. I can't believe I didn't do this years ago. Such a good device, my pants pockets are happy too.
