We rolled out a new zoom for photos on the web. Thanks @vincent for working on this! It turned out really well. Here’s a quick demo video.

@manton A simple addition, but one that was definitely needed. It looks great!!

@manton @vincent How can one zoom into a photo using a keyboard?

@paulrobertlloyd @vincent There’s no way. I think first we’d need keyboard navigation for selecting posts in the timeline, like we have in the Mac app. That is probably a ways off.

@manton @vincent How so? It appears posts are being embellished with JavaScript; if you were to wrap every image with a button, and use that to initate the zoom, you’d get keyboard access for free. Complicated, but not impossible.

@paulrobertlloyd @vincent You’d need to get focus to the button, though… I guess I generally don’t have tabbing to buttons enabled. It feels awkward to me unless you can use the keyboard to navigate the timeline.

@manton You can navigate the timeline using VoiceOver, though it would be easier if there were labelled landmarks. It’s been 4 years since I highlighted low hanging accessibility issues, many of which remain.

@manton The newer mobile menu is a little better (you can access the dropdown menu using the keyboard), so that’s progress, I guess. And the autogenerated alternative text and improvements to editing photo descriptions is encouraging, but these features just scratch the surface. There are big wins to be had with just a little more focus on accessibility, I reckon.

@manton Trying this out now on the Mac. Good addition. But does this mean that this is a step toward making the images in the timeline smaller or better still, in some kinda grid layout in case of multiple photos?

@pratik I would put it this way: if and when we have a different layout for multiple-photo posts, this will also help.

@paulrobertlloyd @manton Hoping to remove the JavaScript rendering of posts one of these days.

@Vincent @manton That’d make things a little more robust sure, but there’s a lot than can be done without needing a complete architectural rethink! Accessibility doesn’t need to be brilliant on day one, just better than it was the day before; there have now been many days where things have remained the same.
