The renewed interest in open, social web protocols has been a long time coming. It’s like we were in a drought for most of the 2010s, subsisting on the water leftover from the early blogosphere, and now it’s raining. Drink up, folks! The skies are blue and the future’s bright.

@manton I love it. Do you think everyone will eventually settle on one, or are there always going to be 2-3 popular protocols? And would that even matter?

@oddevan I honestly have no idea. I can see it going a couple different ways.

@colin Beeper does a good job of at least putting the main chat apps into one spot. (Not great for discord though)

@aaronschendel Beeper manages to somehow be an even worse Discord experience

@dfj I’ve used it, just keeping an eye on it for now. The protocol is interesting.

@manton Yea, I'm thinking it might be worth keeping an eye on for non-social network use cases, at least that's where my interest is at.

@dfj I can imagine some compelling uses for it... Note sharing or encrypted DMs, maybe.
