Importing some old posts. I’m still proud of “Bubbles, Baseball, and Mr. Marsh,” written after listening to a post-2016 election podcast by @gruber and @hotdogsladies, although it got no attention on Medium.

@chipotle merely saying “great piece!” to this, doesn’t even begin to do it justice. I wish I had read this two years ago, it probably would have helped me process some of this a bit better
@chipotle I took Americanism vs. Communism in Miami in the 70s. It was one of my favorite classes because of the teacher, who taught it as a Russian History class. But I still did an exposé for the student paper on how ridiculous the law that required it was. And discovered the law didn’t actually require you to pass it.
@macgenie that's pretty neat. And I didn't know that about the law! I took it in the early '80s; I think they stopped requiring it in 1986 or 87.
@chipotle Just read this twice while waiting for my quinoa to cook. ;) I’m still thinking about what I want to say about this. I’m a gen-x like you, grew up in Washington state, said the pledge of allegiance every day at school and stood up with my hand on my heart whenever the national anthem played. But I live in New Zealand now. It’s been home for me since 1990. From once-inside, now outside-looking-in, the US is so confusing to me.
@chipotle Clapping seems complicated and inelegant compared with a simple Like/Recommend/Thumbs up. However, I think it does help Medium to distribute the membership subscriptions more equitably among writers who (unlike me) publish under the partnership program. Anyway, I’m used to it now.
