The product — essentially a smart speaker without a display — will be shaped like a doughnut that’s roughly the size of a hockey puck […] The battery-powered item will be designed to work in different positions — in a user’s hand, say, or placed on a nightstand or kitchen counter.

@manton Don’t really get how this is all that different than the AI friend thing you linked to a few days ago (the necklace one).
All these things seem to be taking on a similar shape/idea.
Don’t quite understand what problem any of these solve.
Outside of portability, what is better about this than the phone I already have and Siri AI?
What happens if/when Apple adds a battery to the HomePod mini? Or a future HomePod Micro?
All of this is to sat I think all of this is stoopid.
@patrickrhone yep I thought Alexa etc had proved we don’t want a display less device to talk to, our phone is the input device for all the other devices and works really well
@patrickrhone yup— every time I read this I cannot figure out what could possibly make this a product I want in addition to my phone. And I know it cannot replace my phone.
@patrickrhone I think the main difference with the Friend pendant is that the Friend can’t really do anything. I expect the OpenAI donut to be much more capable than Siri. But it’s definitely not for everyone. And at that price, not even a direct competitor to most smart speakers.
