Still interesting to see people talking passionately about the Open Web and how bad silos are (which is good) whilst simultaneously linking only to Apple things and app-locked things in general; the web is still here and it damned sure isn’t exclusive to Apple and your phone.

@simonwoods Yes, certainly some irony in that! My first day here I discovered it was an Apple platform & almost bolted for the door, but didn't. It's been interesting, watching as an outsider. It's mostly been fun with nice people, but I worry it will always keep the narrow focus.

@Ron I find it odd that you can talk about how much you care but not follow up with further substantial contributions to the community. I understand it's important to stay in your lane and whatnot but the words being used are quite strong and lack an appropriately paired message of action and proof of change.

@simonwoods Wow, I've been attacked, wasn't expecting that! In the old days a person was pretty much immune from negativity on his/her birthday. Who else here has posted on radio, Bob Dylan, fireflies, Thai people, bloggers in Tanzania, Fawlty Towers, the part of the 60's that sucked? I have contributed what I know about. You are rude. I don't know in what way you think I should change. Maybe others will want to offer some criticisms of my activities on Micro.blog and suggest ways I should change?? I'll listen . . . up to a point. Anyone else?

@Ron Yes, I was surprised by @simonwoods's comment. You have been one of the most active posters on here, as far as I've seen. I don't think anyone can accuse you of not contributing to the community.

In fact, I wonder if he meant to reply to a totally different post.

I agree entirely with @devilgate; Ron, you are without a doubt one of the most varied and substantial contributors to Micro.blog.

@simonwoods @ron Now we see the goodness inherent in the system! Micro.blog is a place where people own up to their mistakes and apologise.

@simonwoods I think you bring up a good point and it’s something I think about quite a lot. I try to encourage participating in the open web and do so myself, but I’m not sure how/why that’s related to what flavor device one runs. In other words, why does using Apple products preclude someone from participating and promoting the open web? Genuine question and would like your thoughts.

Based upon this and other things I've seen here, I think the community guidelines need to be updated so they don't just ban blatantly bad things, like hate speech, abuse & harassment, but also promote something positive, such as promoting good will among all peoples of the world. @manton @macgenie If anyone else agrees, I'd like to hear from you. @simonwoods It's been a very busy week for me, so I did not make the time to properly reply to this. You are welcome. But I didn't just give you trust, you earned it with the quality of your posts over a long time. There is a big difference between a mistake and a person's character. You made a mistake, but because of your good character you took responsibility for your mistake as soon as you realized you had created an effect you had not intended. That's the real reason this got fixed so quickly, YOU fixed it. It was not because of the Micro.blog team, though we certainly both appreciate their cleverness. As they say in some circles, "As you were," or in others, just "Okay, continue on your way."

@bradbarrish It's part of my ongoing thoughts about Apple, in particular the culture in and around the company. Instead of being open selectively via the open web there is an apparent culture of silo-based behaviour, eg. links to the iTunes store which is mostly useless for people outside of the silo, app-centric thinking for developing new things. Of course some of these things are slowly improving but I still find the juxtaposition more than a little interesting.

@simonwoods I suppose it's all about what one priortizes. Secuirty and privacy are big ones to me and there are not viable alternatives to Apple or Google, so I try and do the best I can. I know alternatives exist, but for me and my life there's not really anywhere else to go.
