I really think hosted Micro.blogs need an on-blog comment system so non-blogging friends can comment. If you are coming from FB, you can tell your friends about RSS readers and keeping in touch, but if they can’t converse with you it’s all for nothing.

@bradenslen Agreed that the migration-from-Facebook story is still rough/incomplete. But rather than Micro.blog implementing a separate on-blog comments system, why not just use the existing one—suggest that friends create a Micro.blog account? It costs nothing, in and of itself, and they’d get the 10-day trial of their own actual blog plus the ability to comment on your (and everyone’s) posts via the Timeline/Conversations, in perpetuity.

I think a lot of us are already using the Timeline/Conversations as a replacement for the traditional comments section (and Manton has said that he does want to give hosted blogs the option to display their received webmentions—which would include comments from these Conversations—if the blog owner wanted; for now, they’re just being collected and stored somewhere until that option is in place). // cc @simonwoods @JohnPhilpin

@smokey Yes there are work arounds, but every hoop you make people jump through you are going to lose some people.

I'm trying to figure out how to recommend to friends that they try blogging on their own domain, instead of on Facebook. I'd really prefer that they come to Micro.blog hosted rather than send them to Wordpress.com or .org. My gut hunch is that only the bravest and most tech/web savvy would give blogging a try the rest, not so much but they might comment.

The Micro.blog blog hosting and the MB community are kinda seperate things, but if I disconnected my feed from my MB hosted blog to the MB community I wouldn't really have a stand alone blog.

I do think adding comments has got to be a huge, hard task. What with spam defenses, displaying, approval, responses, plus all the Indieweb stuff. So this is in no way a demand on my part, I'm just seeing FB slowly sinking and I'm trying to figure out where to advise people to go and do. Sorting the lifeboats.

OTOH people coming from Twitter is easy: get them to sign up for MB hosted for a few months. It's the FB transition that is harder.

@simonwoods You bring up some good points. What if: 1. The conversation (like this one) got posted as comments on your MB hosted blog post, and 2. webmentions also got posted to your blog (including Facepiles)?

@bradenslen Pretty sure that will be possible at some point, hopefully soon; I think it ties in nicely with the username updates. Although, it definitely needs to be an option and I would say off by default.

I'm not sure how FB replies work within this context, if at all. If they can work I would definitely want them as their own separate option for enabling.

@simonwoods Since FB won't let us crosspost, I would omit FB replies. Also I wouldn't want that kind of discourse on my blog. Too toxic.

@smokey I wonder why it would take for @manton to enable disqus integration into native microblogs ... we used to have that on 1999 and @blot has it as a turn on / turn off option.

@JohnPhilpin When we have more theme editing, you should be able to add it, but I think replies that are more integrated with Micro.blog (so they show up in the timeline) is a better long-term solution.

@manton i agree - i guess one lesson from disqus is simplicity .... something that is not part of web mentions .....
