Back to having power outages in Austin (and probably rest of Texas) due to the cold weather. Finally one of our live oak tree branches cracked and narrowly missed the front porch. Staying in bed to stay warm.

@pratik Hope y'all escape anything too bad. Hearing branches crack is frightening.

@pratik I’m glad it didn’t knock out your power and happy that you’re safe.

Years ago, I was watching a Florida thunderstorm from my living room when one of the massive live oak tree limbs crashed down. It shook the whole house and left a permanent dent in the lawn. The tree surgeon told us that all live oaks tend to split at some point in their growth cycle with one side heavier than the other, causing a future split.

@manton @pratik glad power is back on for you. Also glad we aren’t in the affected areas currently; we’re north of Houston now, and were originally going to head up by Dallas today, but extended our stay a couple days to avoid the snow and ice.

@pratik Wishing you good luck for getting that power back and hope that beautiful tree is not damaged too badly. You have enough books to stay warm, I suppose.

@manton That's what woke us up. Luckily, we had our trees pruned a couple of weeks ago so very few dead branches so feel bad at healthy ones cracking and falling down. We just had a medium one fall in our backyard @Parag

@pratik Up in NE Texas, I've managed to keep the power on. My parents and grandparents haven't been so lucky.
