I’ve been using Libby/Kindle for reading for a few years now, but lately it seems it’s becoming more and more popular. Previously, I rarely had to place a hold, almost everything was available immediately. Now it’s the opposite. Placing a hold is the norm, often many weeks out.
@Mtt This is the primary reason I gave up on using Libby, next to the pathetic selection my library card affords me with it.
@pimoore You can better your chances by getting memberships to different library systems. For some, you have to either live or work in their system/city. For others, you have to pay. It doesn't solve the issue, but it definitely helps. Here's a good one to start with that you can do in 5 minutes without paying or visiting: New Orleans Public Library.
@pratik Yogi Bera! Ha. When I'm in "just find anything" mode, that's what I do. But sometimes, I want something specific. The Hunt for Red October had a few week wait list for me. It's from 1984 (although popular again).
@Mtt Thanks, Matt, great idea! I should look into the Toronto pubic library too, even if I end up having to pay for a membership.
@christopherchelpka @pimoore Harris County (Houston) is another option. And very easy. Large library system with good ebook inventory. I just added it.
@Mtt Great discussion here. I use Libby exclusively and find it challenging to find a book I want. Even though I have access to three different city libraries. Amazon (a partner of Libby) removed a lot of books from there because of the revenue loss.
@silverfox I haven’t run into anything that didn’t work with my Kindle via Amazon yet. Hopefully that continues for me.
@Mtt Sorry, I wasn’t clear. We can still read library titles via Kindle, but Amazon pulled a lot out of Libby in favor of consumers buying from them. www.theverge.com/2021/3/10...
@silverfox Ah, I understand now. Not as bad as I was thinking, but still annoying. I’m guessing a lot of those titles fall under Kindle Unlimited, something I’ve never seen the value in subscribing personally.
