@smokey @macgenie Oh no, I hope not! 🙂 We wanted to experiment with email, but the format may evolve and there's still a lot of room for other recommendations.

@manton @macgenie No, it’s a great idea, and a neat expansion of Discover and the ideas behind it into a different medium (and one that can help remind everyone, especially inactive folks, how vibrant the community is).

And the more recaps the better, especially as I have been struggling to keep up with mine due to travel and such.

Related, photos.micro.blog seems to be “down” right now, which makes viewing the Discover Photos timeline in Sunlit a rather grey experience.

@manton are we closer to RSS feeds for categories or elements in the discover section like ‘books’

@JohnPhilpin When you say categories are you talking about in Discover specifically? Or do you mean the categories available for Hosted sites?

@smokey Ha! Yourself, John, and Amit are all pioneers and even with an official newsletter there is obviously still plenty of activity to cover. At this point somebody could take your posts, the Discover feed, and this newsletter all into a feed reader and there would still be great posts and conversations to catch up on after the fact.

@simonwoods example

what is the RSS feed for (say)

micro.blog/posts/dis...

it is a JSON feed - and that isnt being validated by w3 - is there an alternative?

or even

john.philpin.com/categorie...

@JohnPhilpin For the first one, no, there are no feeds for the Discover sections (tagmoji or otherwise) that I am aware of. It's definitely a good feature request.

For the second, however, yep those exist. Each category comes with a feed built in; I logged that for a full explanation.

@simonwoods

hmm,

john.philpin.com/categorie... is a valid place on the web

but

john.philpin.com/categorie...feed.xml does not validate

?

@JohnPhilpin I'm pretty sure they work in feed readers and stuff but I don't know what the validation error means. There might even be a bug logged about this. I'll check up on it and post back.

@simonwoods well indeed - adding john.philpin.com/categorie... to NetNewsire and voila - also

this works

BUT …

oh wait - stand down - this is interesting ... I am using a WP plug in and ... more to come. Hang on.

@simonwoods problem ‘fixed' ?? flaky plugin ..

I am now showing the last 5 posts from my micro.blog stream that I have categorized as music [here] - I didn’t want to bring them into the main flow on the blog itself.

The issue was that I had another feed in there that I knew was bad and the plug in couldn’t get past that to find the ‘happy feed’ - even when I validated the feed - it still failed.

Anyway all good now - KILLED 😊

@vasta :-)

(I was hoping finally to have another one out today, but dodging gardening in between storms and cleaning in advance of company has foiled that plan….)

@simonwoods Yep. I hope @manton and @macgenie took the post in the light-hearted (and welcoming 👏) spirit that it was intended—but how often does a mere mortal like me get to use that historic phrase, you know? 😀

@smokey It's not technically sherlocking because we use WAY more than 280 characters. 😇

So you’re saying you’re also using APIs that aren’t available to everyone else…what’s next, taking 30% of the replies I get on my posts? 🍎😈
