You know that writing / blogging / publishing debate that crops up from time to time ,…

”In WordPress 5.1 all references to Blogging will be replaced with the word Publishing.”

@JohnPhilpin It’s probably ridiculous of me, but that feels like a betrayal.

Also it couldn't come at worse time, with blogging undergoing a renaissance -- or maybe a re-recognising, since it never went away.

@JohnPhilpin I find this quite depressing. There is a lot of life left in blogging.

@JohnPhilpin End of an era, I say. Especially now when blogging is making a comeback.

@johnjohnston My view is bury that word. It's not a particularly nice sounding word. There are better alternatives.

@kaa maybe sad would be better than depressing. I prefer not to try to be a writer and the blogging hat is loose enough to fit.

@jenett of course, it is not a real problem, just a feeling I think. I've no intention of moving away from WordPress.

@johnjohnston I completely agree with your sentiment my issue is that I dislike the term blog. Orgins of shortening Web-log? Whatever it is, I feel we should be able to come up with something better.

Online publishing (Onpub)? Micro Publishing (micropub)?

@kaa @johnjohnston I used to think that “blogging” was such a bizarre word, but over the decades it’s worn me down.

That said, language is important, and good organizations don’t just change it randomly; this change is symbolic in important ways. Even though WordPress has for years been a blogging platform that is also a generic CMS/publishing platform, it’s now officially a publishing platform that happens to be useable for blogging, with all the attendant shifts in focus, priorities, and whatnot that implies. I’m a bit surprised that “blogging” didn’t get axed in 5.0, but maybe they wanted to keep the illusion of being blogging software in 5.0 so they weren’t fighting two battles with 5.0…?

Exactly. And very well put.

@JohnPhilpin If I’d been less tired when I wrote that, I might have remembered to link “Language is important” to this post and subsequent conversation 😉

@smokey great article - and like @vasta - never thought of the browser name progression before … i am not sure in times past as much creative thought was given to names of organizations … in my own history thinking about companies ….

IBM - International Business Machines DEC - Digital Equipment Company SUN - Stanford University Networks Microsoft … too obvious to warrant explanation Oracle - the name of the CIA project that was Oracle's first ever project

but ...

Netscape - very descriptive - tho' curiously not Webscape Apple got it's name shortly after Steve returned from staying in Oregon at ‘Apple Orchard’

begin to reveal where names might be heading
