Ever since first adding book reading to Micro.blog, I’ve tried to avoid recreating my own book database. So we lean on Google Books, Open Library, Goodreads, and even (for a while) paying for metadata. I think that approach has run its course. Going to add our own book curation and cover tools.

@manton I love what you are doing with it. Really appreciate all the efforts for such a unique app. Will you be adding further features to the notes app?

@Munish Thanks! Yes, I use notes in Micro.blog heavily now. We’ll keep improving it. Lemme know if you’d like to see anything in particular.

@manton a sizable undertaking! What limitations have you run into with those third parties?

@manton ooh you may regret that. Nested notes, within bullets would be amazing.

@gclves Mostly a feeling of loss of control. What if I want different sized covers? What if I want a different kind of search? I think we need our own books layer in here to improve the experience.

@manton I keep seeing all these updates to Micro.blog lately and can’t help but think of your post from after last year’s election where you said loss can be a motivator.

> For me, I’m writing this blog post, and I’m picking up in Xcode where I left off yesterday. There is a lot to do. Let’s get to work.

You’ve really been making good on that! Love to see it!

@manton.org I enjoy meeting people who are between the same covers of the books on my shelves. Micropublishing takes this up a notch.

@manton categories would be my most ideal with the ability to sort.

@manton I’ve not tried it yet. As an Apple person, I use Apple Notes a lot. Am I missing something?

@manton I’ve just spent the last quarter of an hour uploading images and changing the covers of some of the books on my Currently Reading bookshelf 🙂

@thedimpause That’s a good reminder for us to improve the custom cover workflow! I think it could be a lot faster, essentially skipping the step of having to upload to your blog.

@gar Thank you. I’m still very motivated, and I think this past year I have an even clearer picture of what we should be focusing on.

@Eyebeemania If you’re happy with Apple Notes, no reason to switch away. For me, I prefer having something that is just a bunch of Markdown files, so Micro.blog notes are based on that.

@manton maybe this is obvious but how do I get my notes out as md files as then I could if I wanted to bring them into Obsidian ? I’m also wondering why I keep paying for Ulysses …however my fav quick notes app has been for a while Bike (I have bike 2 preview) which has plug ins and lore. Hmm I wonder if there is some workflow from strata notes to that…

@adamprocter There’s an export on the web under Notes → “…” menu. The Mac app will also automatically save them to a folder. We don’t have 2-way sync yet other than a manual import.

@manton am I missing how to add notes in the iOS app?

@matthewhurst Notes aren’t in the main Micro.blog app. Instead there’s a separate app Strata (App Store link) that is just for notes. And also notes in the new version of Epilogue, for books.

@manton I could’ve sworn iOS 26 added support for markdown in notes.
