It looks like my ATR-2100 has finally stopped working. Give me your microphone recs, cause I’m going shopping. (And I’m getting more than one, because duh, I should have a backup.)

@jean I thought you used a Shure SM58? (Was sure I heard that on the @monday you recorded on the airport).

@jean I really liked the ATR-2100 that I used for a while, but I updated to a Shure MV7 and I'm really happy to not need a pop filter anymore.

@jean Maybe the Shure MV7 (or if you didn't have any other reason to get a new one, get the same one?)

@odd Oh yeah, that was the Shure MV88. That’s a great little portable microphone that has a lightning connector so it’s perfect for the iPhone.

@Burk @jsonbecker I think I will try the MV7. I’d get another ATR2100, but they updated to the ATR2100X, and I don’t remember why I wasn’t too keen on the changes. 🤔

@jean My recommendation is to try out several microphones, since every voice is unique.

When I upgraded my old USB mic I wanted to buy the Heil PR40, but when comparing some microphones that model was the one that sounded the worse. In the end, I settled on the RØDE Procaster.

@jean if I recall, it was just $20 more + USB-C.

@jsonbecker @jean as a 2100x owner, the differences seem to be USB-C PLUS the mute button and led indicator are together now. That's it. I've done a lot of research on Podcast Mics recently and the MV7 does seem to be a top USB one.

@ChrisJWilson @jsonbecker @Burk @jeroensangers @odd I ordered the MV7 and the ATR 2100x. I have to have something set up and ready to go by Thursday. It sounds like the MV7 is a nice upgrade, if heavy. I know the ATR, and I figure I can count on it. Also, it was still reasonably priced, $79, that I’d be fine with it as a backup and travel mic.

Right now I’m in the weeds of figuring out if it’s even a mic problem. I can’t even record with the built-in mic on the MBP M1. I have recorded via my AirPods Pro, so that’s one bit of data. Trying to have a positive attitude toward troubleshooting. (And another thing: I’m totally decluttering and reorganizing all my cables. 🤦🏼‍♀️)

@jean Hummmm what software are you recording with? Quick Time?

@ChrisJWilson I’ve tried both QT and Audio Hijack. The system preferences don’t show the built-in mic picking up anything. The AirPods worked though so I’m really in a troubleshooting mystery.
