One note about the "metaverse". I think it's disgusting. Anyone pushing further disconnect of life and the real world and taking away physical contact or items... should be put in a straitjacket and shipped to a maximum security mental institute. Locked up. Forgotten.

@vincent I've read a lot about Metaverse lately and I don't get it at all. Everything from immaturity of technology to actually implement it to tying it to artificial scarcity stinks (and we are not even mentioning the unhealthy world were it to succeed).

I've decided that I will not touch anything related to it professionally. I assume this waves hand wildly to the direction of Metaverse will fail gloriously. If it won't: I'll be happy, slightly grumpy, old man walking in a forest.

@vincent last night we watched We Met in Virtual Reality. Really interesting while being sad and a little creepy. Everyone seemed to have their traumas. One woman had attempted suicide. Another was getting over the death of someone close and important. Another was suffering from the isolation of COVID. I think there was some value in this, but also sad that there were not real world places and people to turn to. The documentary is slow in places but I thought worth watching.

@vincent amen!! It's not just a poorly designed idea from a technical standpoint, it's actively harmful. I don't understand how people don't see it for what it is - a way for the rich to get richer at others' expenses.

@tkoola I don't think there is anything to "get". It's just another tech world dream to get normal people to again be stuck on some device. Another addiction. A new drug. I don't understand why there is so much coverage about it in the first place. It's like a cancer.

I hope stuff like this fails. It has to. So much has been removed from life already and yes we have the power to stop it... but it's not easy for everyone. It's like asking somene to stop smoking or drinking when it's given to you for free.

Once people sit in the bus with VR headsets, I'm just going to quit.

We will meet in the forest!

Seeing where "internet/social/big-" tech is going makes me so sad and makes me want to hang my head in utter shame.

@jahziel People are blind because they mostly look at "face value" and never stop to think... "But it's the NEXT THING!!! HASHTAG HASHTAG OMG VR VR". Urgh, dumb.

@vincent But we must consume! …and pretend there is a wonderful world online that is more important than the ”real” world, because that one is crashing and burning anyway. 🙄

@Archimage Nightmares DeLuxe! I remember seeing a movie in the early 80s about VR helmets, and how bad it can get, but I don’t remember the title.

@Archimage It could be it… I think of the title “Scanners” for some reason, but I’m not sure.

@vincent Couldn't agree more. The fact they want people to ignore real-world problems while the planet burns is disgustingly tone deaf, and only makes things worse.
