Hadn’t thought about trying new email clients in a while, but reading a post on Micro.blog made me download Canary for iOS, and I’m now testing it. Quite happy with Spark, but what is one supposed to do ? Shiny new apps make postpone editing easier..

@maique Oh no, don't tempt me! 😬 I'm running the (excellent) MimeStream beta on my Mac and I've been looking for something equally good on iOS (I use the stock Mail app). Guess I'll have to explore Canary now. 🙃

@AngeloStavrow I’m very happy with Spark. I have so many accounts and aliases that trying a new one is also a pain. Adding accounts now, slowly.

@maique Oh gosh, I know what you mean. Does Spark (or Canary, for that matter) run your email through their own servers? That's what keeps me from trying many of these other email apps.

@AngeloStavrow Both of these will hold some of your mail and/or credentials if you use certain functionally. Like push notifications. It’s why I haven’t used these apps as well.

@AngeloStavrow Readdle (Spark’s developer) is a respectable company, but if you use certain of their features, your email is stored on their servers. The scheduled send, for example, requires your email to be stored on their servers because it will send at your designated time even if you don’t have the app open. It’s a great feature, but that’s definitely something to take into consideration.

@AngeloStavrow Canary seems to respect privacy, they talk a lot about it on their site. I would expect Spark to do the same, but they do create folders on your servers, for a couple of their features (snooze and send later)... But I'm not an expert, so take my words at their value (very little).

@mcg @gpittman Thank you. That's what I remembered reading about, but glad you saw this one and managed to answer the question. I wasn't too sure about the details, and afraid I would say something not true.

@maique @rcg @gpittman Right, that's what I thought. I know Readdle has been around for a long time and I've no reason to suspect any kind of mailicious intent from either them or the org behind Canary! I think that as an email user I'm pretty boring (check it a few times a day, without the need for anything beyond simple drafting/replying/forwarding), so these power features aren't meant for me — and therefore I personally don't feel comfortable handing over access to my email just to use a different client.

@AngeloStavrow That’s understandable. I’m a teacher and if I accidentally stumble on a message after hours (I use SaneBox to create a Do Not Disturb period outside of school hours but sometimes I bump into the filter folder), I may write a response and schedule it to be sent during school hours. I could wait to send the reply, but then there’s the mental friction of knowing I have a message waiting for me. I don’t want to train students or other faculty/administration that I’m always available.

@gpittman I can totally see the value in that!
