I never liked the word “fancy.” The way it sounds and its various meanings always make me cringe a tiny bit. I never use it in my writing. When the random word generator served it up as today’s Microblogvember prompt, I sighed. #mbnov

@macgenie Like the word “luxury” or “luxurious”, in the UK, where it’s been so overused to advertise products that are decidedly not so, that it’s lost all meaning.

@macgenie Yes. It seems to be used pejoratively these days in most contexts. The “flights of fancy” connotation was most appealing to me.

I’ve been looking up etymologies for each word as inspiration. Fancy was originally a contraction of fantasy, which makes me like it more.

@fgtech Me too. Thanks for the insight.

@macgenie hi Jean. Sorry, just to confirm, do our posts need to include the hashtag or only the days word?

@andynicolaides @macgenie I assume it's just the word since in Micro.blog there is no such thing as a hashtag. It's also what is said in the main post and confirmed later by Jean.

@simonwoods Ah interesting, thanks! I assume it has to be in a post, not just a reply?

@andynicolaides Good question! I don't know but I would assume a full post. In the explainer, @macgenie says "write a micropost". Either way it's a good excuse to put those daily blogging muscles into use.

@andynicolaides @simonwoods @macgenie It has to be in a post, not just a reply. But actually to make this easier to track I think we're going to give everyone the Microblogvember pin who has blogged once a day in November (plus optionally a couple days into December for people who started late).

@manton ah great, thanks. That would make a lot of sense. I missed this for today so hopefully I can ‘catch up’ from today :)

@macgenie Because my brain works in mysterious ways, my first thought was: “I wonder what Jean would have done if ‘fanny’ came up?” 🙃

@Bruce I would have rejected it. I made a commitment to myself that I would not tinker with the prompts and generate just one word each day, UNLESS a word turned up that might make people uncomfortable or had a high likelihood to inspire post that would make people uncomfortable.

@bix In Australia, at least, "fanny" is a slang term for "vagina”. Hence a lot of snickering from my Aussie friends when we talk about people here wearing "fanny packs”.

@manton Out of curiosity: I missed day two, but then posted that day's word the next day and backdated the post in Wordpress so it looks like I didn't miss it. (Not sure if this counts as "cheating" or not… 😏) Will I still earn the pin, or did I miss out on that because I didn't send data through micro.blog's servers in the appropriate 24-hour period? It's a technicality of how you're tracking the "post once a day" requirement, so I'm fine either way. It was my own goof, after all.

@djwudi You'll still earn the pin! Micro.blog just looks at the date on the post, even if it was actually sent later.
