It has now been a couple days since I stopped federating my posts to Mastodon. As expected I get effectively no replies from Mastodon now. I still get replies from Micro.blog and Bluesky. RSS still exists. Good experiment so far.

@manton It’s a good test but I would argue that not entirely representative since I imagine most of your ‘followers’ are on micro.blog. I imported 50 or so followers from Mastodon and I believe all of my replies are still from that community and no one on Micro.blog knows I exist :P
@AdamChandler You’re right, this is going to vary a lot between people and who is already following them. Also hope more people on Micro.blog see your posts!
@manton Hah, I actually really love and respect the product decision of not having follow-counts. It creates an unhealthy relationship with influence and breeds narcissism. I just love blogging and I love the mystery.
@manton Did you get much more comments from the Mastodon side than Bluesky, or lower signal to noise ratio?

@manton Is it possible to migrate your Mastodon/ActivityPub followers to your micro.blog profile?
Although I guess you said you just stopped syndicating. You didn’t close your Mastodon account, I assume.
@AdamChandler Well that is not so. I followed you too from my timeline. So see you are gaining new followers everyday. Glad Matilda is recovering nicely. Take care!
@mlm361 Hah, see that’s the beauty of this service. I have no idea who’s following me! I appreciate it. she has not been sick yet (16 months old) but daycare is correcting that and yet she bounced back so quickly.
@AdamChandler Yes, daycare is definitely a petri dish and an immune builder for not only the kids but the parents too.
@mackuba.eu Number of comments have been roughly equal from Mastodon and Bluesky lately, or maybe a little more on the Mastodon side. There is a different feel to each platform but I’m not sure I can make a blanket statement about tone or noise.

@nertzy Yeah, this is a new preference that essentially temporarily disables federating blog posts without losing the ActivityPub profile. You can migrate followers, though. There’s a help page here about it.
@manton Feel the same way about Bluesky tbh 🥲 after 3 years I finally get some traction on Twitter and everyone moves lol
@AdamChandler @manton Re-liberated my words and thoughts after all these years. Thanks both for the help, examples, and tools.
@liana I’m so glad we’re in touch again and it’s nice to have you here. I haven’t quite found my community in this space yet but I think that’ll come with time. The reasons for not using Facebook or X are higher than ever and I hope more people come to the indie web.
@AdamChandler I’m glad, too. We’re back to where we started. So nice to meet you here. Ha! I’m sharing by email and word-of-mouth, your post and helping all I can. Thanks for the inspiration.
@manton mastodon people can still follow you but you don’t see any replies? Have I got that right?
@aeryn your posts are not sent to Mastodon, but if they’re on your blog and you show the “reply with Mastodon, MB, or Bluesky” thing on your blog, they can use that to comment on your post (I’m pretty sure) and you will see that. So basically they have to follow you on RSS or go to your site to know you posted and respond.
@jsonbecker thanks. I was asking hypothetically, not really for myself. I didn’t really get the nuance of that new feature. I’m happy to be fully masto’d myself. Makes sense, thanks :)
