⚠️ Since Micro.blog counts link URL characters are part of the character limit (and I’m not aware of any effort to change that) I wish the native clients offered a url shortener when needed (I currently use is.gd). cc/ @gluon

@zorn I wish that photos and links did not count. cc @manton

@cdevroe @zorn URLs don't usually count. What counts is what you see on screen. If you link some text, that text counts, but the full URL that it's pointing to does not. (There's a bug with the web editor, though, that counts everything incorrectly.)

@zorn I’m not getting that on the iOS client... it’s a feature I would love to get on Gluon, but the official client does a great job counting characters, in my opinion.

@manton @cdevroe @maique This is the behavior I run into:

@zorn I see. But you don’t have the link formatted in Markdown. Just the URL pasted as text. That might be why the app is not taking it as a link, and simply as text.

@maique @zorn Yep, that's it. Micro.blog automatically Markdown-ifies the link to "shorten" it but it doesn't do that until it has been posted. We should update the app to account for this. Thanks!

@manton Thanks for the clarification.

@manton My first thought was to work around the character counter with pointed brackets but the app doesn't recognise the pointed bracket as a way to mark a plain URL. The web app recognises it as Markdown but still counts the brackets as characters.

@zorn I need to fix Gluon’s character counter to take into account markdown... it literally counts what you type. Sorry if that’s somewhat confusing.
