@manton About Facebook: The one thing it does provide that (as far as I know) indieweb alternatives don’t is an inner circle (private from all but the Evil Facebook Overlords) with whom to share, for example, baby pictures. How could this very real use-case work on the indieweb?

@manton (Obviously I understand there are other ways to share baby pictures like iMessage or other private group services, but I would love there to be a “permanent” indieweb way to do so that included owning your own data).

@zachphillips We've chosen not to tackle private groups right now because there is an extra responsibility of making it bulletproof, and there's enough to improve just with public blogs. But there are people in the IndieWeb thinking about it.

@manton Cool, and totally understandable. Not an easy problem, especially when trying to hold to high independent standards.

@zachphillips I don’t follow the developments closely, but I recall @jgmac1106 had a nice discussion of some of the interesting things IndieWeb folks are exploring in this area on his episode of @EddieHinkle’s @MyURLIs postcast late last year. (Also, for the specific use-case of baby photos, it sounds like something like @smith’s Bokeh could be a solution.) I think lots of us are asking about the private-sharing use-cases, and it’s good to know the IndieWeb brain trust is working on it, even if there’s still no drop-in replacement for Facebook yet…

@zachphillips @smokey There are definitely experiments going on with IndieWeb tech, but definitely nothing ready for prime time yet. The need for those solutions has been rising lately though, so there is more thought and experimentation going on and hopefully we'll get there before too long!

@smokey yes! We’ll have a private circle you can share to which would be perfect for baby pictures 👶🏼

@EddieHinkle @smokey This is great news. Wish I could be more helpful, but these days I don’t build, just use things and criticize them. :)

@zachphillips Getting even closer and hopefully will be done in a way where the feature can be deployed across services, if you can join us for the Summit my guess is there will be a private session.

@jgmac1106 Thank you! Right now, our baby is due July 25, so might be tight, but I will look forward to videos?

@zachphillips Congrats! Our son was born July 28th last year, so if the baby is a little late, it has a birthday buddy!
