My greatest hope for mastodon, impossible though it is, is that we can leave behind the “favourite to end a conversation” convention. Or the Heart of Dismissal, as I think of it.

@mattgemmell I dont know. we dont have faves here on micro.blog and sometimes it would be nice to have a "I acknowledge your message but have nothing to add" signal. Like a nod in real life. OTOH, that might be just Twitter conditioning.
I propose a simple new convention for this common scenario, which I’ll be implementing immediately. Once a conversation reaches its natural end, I’ll just stop replying.
It’ll either be because we’ve covered everything, or you’ve mortally offended me in some obscure way, thus immediately and silently ending our acquaintance. You should internally agonise over which one it was until the end of your days.
MUCH easier! 💜
@mattgemmell I have used it as an acknowledgment of receipt for ages (at twitter). It didn't stop me from replying ever. Might be a German thing.
@yatil @mattgemmell I can relate to that; in our forums, I often want to express a reaction but a reply feels like it’s make the discussions timeline worse. Upvotes or reactions would be nice. Kind of same here
