Man who burned his passport and went to fight with IS feels like the government has “stabbed me in the back” because it told him to find his own way home…

@herself @yorrike well at least it didn’t feel like the govt cut his head off. i don’t swear on here often but seriously, fuck that guy, he made his bed.

@tones @yorrike agreed. And PM has made a point of saying she won’t leave him stateless. But he seems pretty clueless; if you want the govt to help you at least surely should appear like you’re going to make nice when you get home. But “In the latest interview, he showed no remorse for calling for ANZAC day-linked attacks, nor for IS murders of western hostages - and continued to defend the idea of slavery.” Blegh.

@herself @tones And he says he wants to start a medicinal cannabis company when he gets back to NZ. Like he's going to walk off the plane in Auckland, breeze through customs and catch a cab.

The guy seems to have some mental health issues, so I’m don't want to give him too much grief. If he does make it back here, I hope he gets the help he needs while he's serving whatever prison sentence he gets for joining a foreign terrorist organisation.

@yorrike @tones You’re probably right. I wonder what it was about IS that appealed... it’s not very kiwi to get so worked up about things... 😜 And poor guy; to be the only international terrorist in your country is going to make it hard for him to keep his head down...

@paulcraig901 it’d be funny if it wasn’t such a mess of a situation now...

@yorrike @herself @tones Which leads me to wonder if it is illegal here in NZ to join an overseas terrorist organisation? What about hate speech if you do it overseas? Or inciting riots or whatnot? I have no idea of the law and how things apply here. I don't suppose we have any Kiwi lawyers around here…

@herself There seems to be a set of people who really don’t see real consequences for their actions. It’s like other believe they can have a do-over for every thing they do.

@Miraz yes, where’s a lawyer when you need one? ;P I suppose if we don’t have specifics on overseas behaviour I could only assume the law of the land you’re in would take precedence. But in a wartime scenario I guess this would take over...

@ronguest like the two doofuses who were just arrested here for starting some very large forest fires in the Nelson area. (Idiots!!) What on earth could they have been thinking? They displaced people, endangered houses, pets... Seems we have a lot of stoopid in the news over here today.

@herself @yorrike mental health issues or not it was people like him who made possible the awful, awful things IS did. i’d have some sympathy for him if he was remorseful but he’s not: he stands by beheadings and slavry and endorses violence on nz soil. fuck him.

@Miraz it is illegal under nz law to join and fight with any terrorist organisation anywhere.

@tones so true. I guess it’s easy to mock him a bit because he looks pretty awkward and fish-out-of-water, but at the end of the day he put his lot in with an awful group, and rather than being allowed to just run home when it gets a bit hairy, he needs to be called out on it. That said, there are some convincing arguments for bringing people like him back to “re-condition” and potentially use to educate anyone else who might be potentially groomed in future. Who knows how something like that might play out though. I saw Homeland too ;)

@tones @herself I’m not saying he shouldn’t be punished to the full extent of the law for enabling, and being one of, those monstrous psychopaths. His family even say he’s dangerous, don’t want him back in NZ and “deserves to rot in jail”. I just hope he gets the mental health care he needs.

@yorrike @herself agreed, if he makes it back here he should be punished, and helped if possible. if he makes it back here. after saying what he's said and ripping up his passport the govt shouldn't spend one taxpayer cent on helping him get back.

@yorrike @tones I hadn’t seen that statement from his family. Yikes. That says it all really.
