What’s that repeated thumping / booming we asked one another as we ate dinner outside. It sounded like maybe the army shelling nearby. The answer apparently is: shockwaves from the enormous volcanic eruption in Tonga about 2,500 Km away! Astonishing! 🌋

Reports of explosions heard in New Zealand over 2000km from Tonga.

@Portufraise We just couldn't make out what would be booming like that. It went on for 10 minutes or more, at irregular intervals. That it was a volcano 2,500 Km away still breaks my brain.

@Miraz wow / heard those explosions here just south of Auckland about 2 hours ago - and got us to wondering - mystery resolved though another mystery emerges - 2,500 clicks away! How?

@Miraz Heard them here on a weirdly still Wellington evening too. There were reports of the same booming sounds from as far south as Invercargill!

I heard one or two booms and wondered what they were, then my geology brain kicked in and I ran outside to experience what may be the. OST powerful volcanic eruption I’ll ever experience (from a distance). The earth is truly epic.

@Miraz That is crazy that the soundwaves travelled so far away! I saw on social media that barometers in Melbourne registered the pressure wave when it arrived here, but no noise (that I heard, at least). I just hope people in Tonga are all OK. Some of the videos I saw looked very scary 😔
