I have been searching for the next audiobook to listen to and am just not able to find one. The book that I want to read is not available on the Audible catalog. And the books that Amazon recommends are absolute shit. Sigh! The search continues. ๐Ÿ“š

@cygnoir Great, thank you Halsted ! I would prefer any fiction, preferably humour or mystery. That said, am OK with any brilliant non-fiction too ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜Š

@amit I have some fiction recs, but so far as brilliant non-fiction: Have you read Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman yet? Iโ€™m halfway through and loving it.

@cygnoir Oh, I have already read it and it was one of the best reads of the year. Here's the shelf of the books I've already read.

@amit You might enjoy Mr. Penumbraโ€™s 24โ€‘Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan.

Itโ€™s a tale of books and technology, cryptography and conspiracy, friendship and love. It begins in a mysterious San Francisco bookstore, but quickly reaches out into the wider world and the shadowed past.

@amit Have you read the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series? I โ€˜readโ€™ via audiobook many years ago when I used to commute 2 hour daily for work. I quite loved the narration.

@amit OK, going on your book list and seeing both mystery and fantasy on there, I'm going to recommend China Miรฉville's "The City & the City" to you. It's a detective story with some fantastical elements you might enjoy.

@cygnoir Thank you Halsted for recommending The City & the City -- what a brilliant read. Such unique story and engrossing narration. I really enjoyed the book. I will write a full review after some time. But I am ready for the next, if you have any other recommendation ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ™‚

@amit Also, another librarian just recommended โ€œThe Janissary Treeโ€ by Jason Goodwin to me. She loves historical mysteries and this one is set in 1836 in Istanbul. Looks fascinating, but I havenโ€™t had a chance to read it yet.

@cygnoir @amit @sod Iโ€™ve tagged along with your recommendations, (which sounded great), and my โ€œWant to read/hearโ€ Epilogue list was already long. ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“š @manton I didnโ€™t find The City in The City by China Miรฉville there for some reason.

Some recommendations based on Amit's read list - some I haven't read, some I have -

  • Broad Band: The Untold Story of the Women Who Made the Internet, Claire L. Evans
  • Lurking: How a Person Became a User, Joanne McNeil
  • How to Do Nothing, Jenny Odell
  • Bossypants, Tina Fey (I highly recommend audiobook for this one)
  • (If you like The Princess Bride) As You Wish, Cary Elwes (another good audiobook choice)
  • The Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde - the first one is The Eyre Affair

@kimberlyhirsh Bossypants is so much fun. However, I couldn't finish How to Do Nothing. Great premise but too academic to read (and I am in academia).
