I wonder if this proposed Algorithm Accountability Act has the right idea. Instead of wiping away Section 230, we could chip away at very specific aspects of it. I feel like this could have broad support.

@manton Despite being a Haidt fan, I think we need to remain vigilant against knee-jerk Helen Lovejoy legislation in an age when most of the alleged ills, like crime and violence (~2020 upticks aside), are generally at all time lows and research on things like mental health or online radicalization is quite contested.
Especially given legislation tends to be a lagging scapegoat for the failings of Congress, and particularly after all the speech jawboning that came to define the COVID-era Biden and now Trump presidencies.
I’d rather pursue more solutions like no phones in schools than give the government more power over speech, lest we go down the path of abuses like the UK is demonstrating.
@bax I could pretty easily be convinced about no phones in schools too. Many congressional proposals do seem knee-jerk and not well-grounded in the real problems… This one struck me as fairly reasonable, just skimming it.
@bax in Australia I’m interested to see how we go with this Social Media bans for under-16’s that’s due on Dec 10th. One thing that concerns some are the possibility of Digital ID’s becoming a thing. But, would I rather scan my license and provide to a company, or use an GovID SSO?
