I don’t use a Ring doorbell. But if I did I would not be happy about this.

Police can get your Ring doorbell footage without a warrant, report says

@jeannie Certainly caution is warranted. And you’re not being too cautious as long as you’re comfortable with the trade offs you’ve made (and it sounds like you are). I think the people at risk are mostly the ones who don’t know about what can happen or just don’t care. I have a lot of IoT devices but have my router set to block both incoming and outgoing connections as well as report on activity. It’s not a perfect set up but a reasonable one for our level of caution.

@jeannie Life is risk. For me, it's about understanding the risks, devising mitigating controls to reduce the risk, and accepting the residual risk.

@ronguest how useful are your IoT devices if the access to the Internet is not accessible to those devices and those devices are not accessible to from the Internet?

@khurtwilliams My IoT devices work fine within the home as the blocks are on the WAN side. For remote access I use HomeKit. For any devices I can’t get to via HomeKit my router has a VPN server so I VPN home and then get access. This is also how I access my NAS remotely.

IoT devices in my case includes light switches, smart plugs, security cameras, an oven (!) plus a few homebuilt microprocessor devices.

@ronguest interesting setup. My garage door opener is my only IoT device. Remote access via the myQ app only. I'm less concerned with risk from my network and more concerned with unknown security flaws in the IoT firmware.
