I always panic when prompted for a tip that I wasn’t expecting. Last week, should’ve tipped more for our restaurant delivery driver who waited forever. This week, tipped too much for the plumbers. Hopefully the karma balances out.

@manton Plumbers? I wouldn't think to tip in that situation. Since I'm originally from NZ, non-restaurant tipping situations always confuse me.
@dejus Same here. But because they used an iPhone card reader (maybe Square) it shows a prompt for it. I should've paid more attention.
@manton plumbers huh? hmmm...I've never tipped a plumber before, but I see your note about Square prompting for it. I always feel like a jerk if I don't do it, and I guess that's the whole point behind the prompt, but they're getting paid really well for the service they provide already as opposed to a server.
@sarcassem Exactly. Too many services now have tipping that don't need them. I'd rather every business (including restaurants and delivery) just charge more.
@manton AMEN! We need to start a movement. Pay a living wage to your workers and knock off the tipping.
@manton Yeah. Sadly we don’t live in a social democracy and in most states the tipped minimum wage is unconscionably low. So I try to tip as much as I can. 😑
@manton @sarcassem @Bruce Yeah, in NZ tipping is frowned upon (or at least used to be; it's been a while since I was there, though I doubt that has changed). People are paid fair wages. The US system of not paying restaurant staff fairly, and making it up in tips, really bothers me. I always tip well in restaurants (minimum 20%, often 50% at smaller places), but don't tip for services where people are already paid well. Hey, remember restaurants? I wonder when I'll next go into one.
@dejus @manton @sarcassem @Bruce Tipping is sliding into NZ slightly but it's still definitely not an accepted practice. While we do have minimum pay laws there is now some push to legislate 'a living wage’.
