I never want to see layoffs, but it’s the right move for Apple to officially cancel the car project. It always seemed like a bad fit. I’d love to see a book or web site with all the designs and tech they came up with along the way, though! Must’ve been interesting.

@manton I was thinking the other day – and have literally dreamt about this in the past – the idea of Apple designing and selling an electric bicycle. That’s the radical, ecological transportation device we need more of, rather than heavy and wasteful EVs.

@paulrobertlloyd It would be fun to see what Apple could do there. Still seems like a stretch for the company and not something execs in Cupertino would be into, but a better fit than a car for sure. It would go well with their commitment to the environment and fitness.

@rscottjones Just don't wear the Vision Pro while riding a bike. 🙂

@manton We should talk about it on the podcast, but I don't know if any layoffs were implied? Sounds like the staff will be reassigned.

@danielpunkass Bloomberg said "There will be layoffs, but it’s unclear how many." It does sound like most will be reassigned, though.

@manton Yeah, for example where were they gonna sell the damn things?

I suppose the fantasy wish by some people, including me, is a near-future confluence of VisionOS and CarPlayOS (whatever it is called) for many 3rd party cars. Not goggles, but a HUD of some sort maybe.

@paulrobertlloyd If the Macintosh was a Bicycle-For-The-Mind, is an Apple Bicycle a Macintosh-For-The-Road?

@manton @danielpunkass I knew a guy (my son’s elementary school friend’s dad) who moved to Cupertino a few years ago. His job in Austin was in a self-driving startup. I hope his job is safe.

@manton One day I'd like to see Apple's version of an infant car seat.

I have *never* installed one without swearing and each type has a different and crappier design.

I can't help feeling that an Apple design would be like Time Machine vs Microsoft Backup.
