I’ve been using ProtonMail for over a year, having moved from Google. This blog post, by ProtonMail so a bit of PR to be sure, contains some of the key reasons I made the switch.

Why ProtonMail Is More Secure Than Gmail - ProtonMail Blog

@ronguest I pay for ProtonMail and use it, but not nearly as much as I use Gmail. The biggest problem is it ultimately doesn’t matter as much if ProtonMail isn’t on both ends. If you email someone that uses Gmail using ProtonMail, Google still “sees” it. I pay for G Suite btw.

@bradbarrish This is indeed the case. Now that I think about it I guess I’m a bit odd. No one I email has a gmail.com address. Hmmm.

@ronguest how many of them are ProtonMail customers?

@bradbarrish There are only a few though I’ve been pleased to see folks moving there. My point wasn’t that other non-ProtonMail destinations were necessarily still more secure. Just that I don’t seem to know people still using gmail.

@ronguest yeah, that might have been my bad misinterpreting what you were saying. I also get tires of talking about which email is more secure. Unless there's pgp on both ends or something comparable, it's kind of a silly discussion since most people use Gmail, Hotmail, etc. Even most that have their own domain are probably just using whoever is hosting their site or their registrar. I would like to use less Google (stopped using Chrome), but Gmail and especially Photos are just better products than almost anything else out there for me.
