@jean Tap, tap, tap. Is this thing on? I usually have at least one person for roll call by now. Iโm worried because I initially posted this during our server hiccup earlier. I know we have folks passionate about photography out there!
@pratik @Gaby Thank you! I might be a little paranoid about whether people can hear me or not, after technical difficulties during our first live Micro Camp session. ๐คฃ
@jean Thought you posted just as the server went down. BTW I post on Glass & Flickr too. Flickr is mostly my DSLR dump. I curate on my photoblog and now Glass and may crosspost
@jean ๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ I enjoy taking photos with my iPhone or my Fuji X-T2. Most simply stay in Photos app; some reach Micro.Blog and a very rare few are printed and put on the wall.
@jean You can definitely count me in on this one. Still using Flickr, and trying Glass but seriously doubting I'll stick around. And, sorry, still on Instagram....
@Gaby @pratik so ... since your using Glass (means ice cream in Swedish), what's your impression? What sets it apart from for example Flickr, Instagram, micro.blog, etc? Why would I start using Glass? Who are the intended users, other photographers?
I'm a bit skeptical about yet another photo sharing site and I haven't really understood what "problem" Glass tries to solve.
@jean ๐ I've been a practicing photographer for a long time. I'm on Glass and Flickr. The latter usually only gets photos once in a while these days. I like Glass and the promise of a photography focused community. A few days ago I made this twitter thread with videos of what I like about Glass.
@jean Here! Been shooting on and off since taking photography in high school and developing my own b&w shots. At this point I'm using a Fujifilm X-T4 and absolutely loving it. Hoping to get up into the mountains and out to the beaches this fall for some longer excursions, but for now I'm loving exploring my neighborhood through the lens.
@jemostrom I think @gaby had an excellent long-form post about it yesterday or day before. I recall seeing a post in the Discover section too. Both captured my thoughts well. I still have some concerns about it but the presence of an Export All Photos in Settings makes me feel better.
@pratik @jemostrom It has a very nice interface for just looking at photos, swipe right if you want to see who the photographer is, tap to see EXIF and comments, if you care. Very uncluttered. I really like the way they display people you can follow with little thumbnails of their photos.
@cm Glass has encouraged me to post the photos that Iโm proud of. Since I began the big moving and sale process, almost everything in my Photos library is utilitarian records of furniture, rooms, items for sale, new apartment photos, and screenshots of stuff I need to buy. I had to go pretty far back to find something worth showing to strangers. Iโm going to be looking for more photo ops again. And of course, cross-post back to Micro.blog, where my fun and silly stuff will still reside exclusively.
@jean While I don't consider myself a photographer, I do enjoy taking lots of pictures of my homestead and elsewhere, and doing daily posts on my personal blog and (for a little while longer) weekly posts on my homestead blogโฆ and soon on my full-time motorhome travel blog.
@jean I post on micro.blog and repost for my friends and family on Fb. I gave up on Flickr, 500px, etc. I just like to post for people to enjoy, and the others seem so competitive to me. And the bulk of my photos come from dSLR -> Linux -> website. Apps almost never fail to disappoint me.
@jean @jemostrom. Yup! I love it too. They need to make it better to view landscape-oriented photos but I like that you can't add any filters or do any editing. It's just upload and write a short description, no tags or hashtags. I think Bokeh has missed the boat.
@cliffordbeshers w00t! Linux user in the house! how do you manage your photos? Curious as I want to do the same but on the Raspberry Pi. ;)
@jean I think I am on day 3 or 4 of the free Glass trial. I still prefer Flickr - for the price, it still has more functionality, not to mention that it has a web-client to make it easier to manage your albums, groups, collections and your community as well. :)
@jean I've been a hobbyist photographer for over a decade now. I used to post my photos at flickr.com/patdrybur... but I lost my credentials when the latest acquisition happened. Now I post them on my blog and Instagram.
@simonwoods Aren't the people who are on MB more likely to sign up for Bokeh? It hasn't released yet.
@rom Corelโs AfterShot Pro. It is a reasonable substitute for Lightroom and the like, as long as you dont want to do too much editing. They have the standard level controls, but the clone an healing features arent great. Recently, it doesnt seem to like my external drive, but that might be the drives fault. All in all, it is fairly effective.
@pratik Right, yeah. I donโt think itโs a zero-sum situation. Instead, I think there is more than enough room for multiple indie social networks and that the โmissed boatโ mentality no longer reflects the way people approach these things.
@jean Iโll add my name as I want to get into photography, so might as well start following the masters of the craft!
@cliffordbeshers interesting. Did not know Corel has software for Linux. ha! :)
@jean Add me to the list. On Glass (@keithpound), but just closed my Flickr (and Instgram) accounts. ๐ท
@jean Yes? Yes. Right now it's more editing, big trip last month (2,600+ photos). Plan to share here and on my site.
@jean photos in all formats - iPhone to pinhole - visualisation doesn't require any kit - extensive Flickr
@jean I have a Nikon DSLR and a Fujifilm X100F. Honestly, between my iPhone 12 and my Fuji, I donโt really take my DSLR out these days. Iโve recently started to post to Pixelfed, and itโs been nice to find a small community there. Flickr and 100px always seemed too intense for me. I donโt even know what Glass is!
@jean Canโt believe I didnโt participate when it first went up! I think I even asked for it. I make photos every day and have shown in galleries and a couple of small museums. My portfolio is Studio MBK. I am on Flickr as Michael Bogdanffy-Kriegh; Instagram as studiombk; Tumblr as studiombk. I also post photos here.
@pgkr Glass is another alternative social gathering place for photographers and people who like photography. I subscribed because their values have a lot in common with Micro.blog values, and I am naturally curious to watch the platform and community evolve.
@jean ๐ท ๐
I mostly photograph using my iPhone these days, but I do have an Olympus m4/3 camera with a few lenses that I use on occasion.
I'm on Glass too: glass.photo/doug-jone...
@jean I take Fujifilm X100V & iPhone photos. I tried Glass but it felt redundant to micro.blog & felt like work to build a following and follow. Glass had too many photos lacking key context. I prefer micro.blog.
@jean I've been known to make a photograph here and there. I mostly post on Instagram (I know) but I also have some work on my website as well.
@jean Adding myself to the roll call now that I've picked up an X-T5 to get back into a hobby l left unwillingly a few years back.
@jessekelber I have an X-T2 and have found Dan Bailey's information invaluable. He's now addressing the X-T5 too. For example: danbaileyphoto.com/blog/the-... and his most recent newsletter (23 November 2022) with an Autofocus Tip for the X-H2, X-H2S and X-T5. Just wanted to draw his work to your attention. ๐
About 15 years ago I enjoyed attempting artful photographs on my digital camera and posting them to Flickr. Once the "smart" phone became more popular, the art of photography shifted and lost its "specialness", in my opinion. This past summer I got rid of my "smart" phone and go a Light phone. No camera, no internet, no noise. Just basic call and text. If I am out and see something I would want to take a picture of, I remember that I don't have a device in my bag to do so, and simply enjoy it with my eyes and hope to remember what I saw (or what I felt when I was looking at it).
@jean Hello! Film, and digital here. flickr.com/photos/he... since 2004, and trying out Glass, but might not get past the first two weeks.
@jean joining in on the fun. Just a budding amateur iPhoneographer here, but Iโm really starting to want to learn more.
@UndamnedOne Me too! The iPhone 14 Pro is my only camera. I sometimes fantasize about getting more advanced equipment, but I also like to keep things simple.
@HerbT Glass is really cool. I have an account, but I am not in the habit of posting there. You can share a photo from Glass to Micro.blog, which is probably the workflow I should establish with my best photos. I love skimming my Glass timeline.
@jean I looked online at some gorgeous cameras and oh em gee are they ever expensive ๐ธ๐ธ๐ธ
@manton Dang! Ok. Whenever it's available would be great. It's mostly for archival purposes so if Glass goes down, I've the posts somewhere else too.
@pratik I also recommend downloading a Glass archive every once in a while, just in case. If they go away, I'm sure we'll add an archive import.
@pratik I just tested the Glass export and it's pretty bad. If you want, feel free to upvote this other feedback issue someone created that I commented on: feedback.glass.photo/523
@manton Oh yes. It's pretty clunky and unfriendly. I had written to them separately about it. Didn't think of leaving a feedback issue. I'll upvote this and hope it catches their attention.
