After watching this video, I came to the conclusion that 95% of what I’m doing with Things 3 can be done now with Apple Reminders. Tags, templates, folders, section headers, it’s all there. Some of the things are better presented in Reminders (link previews), and there is a column view that can act as a Ka... blog.numericcitizen.me

@numericcitizen oh, you can display sections as columns. Did not know that. I was using a seperate tool for Kanbanboards when I last needed it.

@numericcitizen It’s the keyboard navigation on Things on the Mac that I love.

With that said, I am using Reminders at the moment because i only use it as lists of reminders added through Siri. I’m rarely in the app itself.

@numericcitizen I reached a similar conclusion and am back to using Reminders. After a bit of tweaking, I rely heavily on the Today view, a default task list, and tags with smart lists. I only create new lists for full-blown projects where I want to use sections and the KanBan view. So far, the setup is working well!

@7robots the problem for me, and I just realized it today, Reminders doesn't support deeplinks to to-do lists like Things does.

@numericcitizen yes, so far as I know, the closest it can approximately is the icloud URL for that list.

@numericcitizen did Things improve in any meaningful way in the last let’s say 6 years?

@gklka I've been using it in the last two years... I don't know. It's a mature app. What would you like to see coming to Things 3? Kanban board (column view)? Better URL previews? Smart lists? What else?

@numericcitizen I don’t know. I used it from 2006 to ~2019, around that time Reminders got powerful enough to support all my workflows. I switched and never look back.

@numericcitizen Thanks for sharing the Reminders video. i had no idea that app had become so capable. I've been using Things 3 for what seems forever, and now you've got me wondering if it's time for a change. For Things 4, I would love the ability to complete repeating tasks early, and it would be great if they could finally handle attachments. Who knows when Things 4 might arrive though......

@numericcitizen I actually ported my entire task list over but reverted a day later when I found that recurring tasks were way underpowered by comparison.

@numericcitizen I agree that Reminders is nearly as good. Although I currently use Things 3, I have been contemplating the possibility of transitioning to Apple Reminders. I haven't yet, because things will allow you to set both a deadline and also a date to start working on a task. I also like it's ability to create templates (I have one for a packing list) and repeating to dos. I think reminders can come close to these functions, but I don't think it quite has them yet, and I also find Things 3 to be a well polished app that I enjoy using.

@numericcitizen this was a very helpful reminder (see what I did there…) about the app and all it can do. Many thanks for sharing!!

@numericcitizen reading this thread, I am bound to ask myself the question why am I still on things given that reminders is so good … and in fact I still use reminders for ‘shared todos’ …

I wouldn’t miss the deep links if I went full on and left things …

BUT … there is something about the delight of the Things interface that holds me. It’s very apple-y … and yet nothing like apple.

Maybe time to look again.

@davespriggs @numericcitizen Reminders lets you set an early reminder that could serve as a “start date”, leaving the normal date to specify when the task is due.

@alltom @numericcitizen As someone still flirting with the idea of going all-in on Reminders (from Things), what’s the issue with recurring reminders in the stock app? I’ve been using them at work and haven’t noticed anything missing, but I’m curious to read more.

@numericcitizen I switched over from Things to Reminders without regrets. It was coupled, though, with an overhaul and simplification of my whole system. The only thing I miss is setting start dates, so that I don’t see items I can’t start yet

@mroutley the lack of deep linking is a dealbreaker for me. I have templates in Craft that reference long running projects in Things via deep links.

@davespriggs I'm curious about your use of templates in Things 3. In watching the video that @numericcitizen shared, I discovered that Reminders has a pretty neat implementation of templates for things like packing lists and recurring projects. I've been using Things 3 for a long while and have never figured out how to implement a template. Can you share how you do it?

@alltom No worries, my requirements for recurring reminders both at home and work are rather minimal, so I'm sure it's not a concern.

@pimoore I tried that and it works. If reminders continues improving, I may switch. For now, I still like the Things 3 UI, but there are advantages to a native Apple app if you are in that ecosystem.

@robertbreen I wanted a Things 3 template from needing packing lists that change slightly, depending on the trip. I did a search and found this article from the Things 3 website and that is how I learned to do it.

@davespriggs Things 3 is a gorgeous app, arguably one of the best of all time. It’s hard to say no to it.
