It’s early days in this new reality of climate collapse. For the most part the people I know still live in the old reality. Climate collapse isn’t something they care about. They’re beginning to see it as extremes become the new norm. More drought in some areas, more intense storms, wil... beardystarstuff.net

@Denny I try to do a/my part, but I’m part consumer robot, so I often fail. We do have extensive recycling where I live, but I see not everyone (neighbors) do the first step in the process: sort their waste. Regarding soap, the one I use is a two-pack, with each soap packaged in paper, but the two together are packaged in plastic. Reacting to your post, I’ll write to the producers and ask if they can’t wrap the two-packs in paper as well. Looking forward to next post.

@odd Thanks for trying! I think perhaps if we all encourage one another. There's so much to be done and it's so easy to feel helpless when we forget that this is a group effort. We can get so much done working together or even on our own but remembering that our actions are a part of that larger effort.

@Denny I did a search for that soap and found it right away at Amazon, six bar variety pack for $25, many yummy flavors. The same brand was offering tons of other soaps in liquid form, all in plastic bottles! I may try the bars.

I remember my mom had some Castile soap in the 40's and 50's, maybe even the Dr. Bonner brand you like. Somehow I transitioned to Dial soap, until my doctor decades later told me it was very bad for my skin. So I switched to Dove soap which I like a lot.

Will the Dr Bonner soap be an upgrade to Dove? As I tell my doctors, I like all my skin to be as soft as a baby's bottom. 👶

@Denny thanks for sharing it! It is a topic I spend a lot of time and personal energy on. It is always nice to know I'm not the only one with the alarms blaring

@Denny I really appreciate your perspective, thanks so much for sharing. I’m struggling against plastic at the moment…it’s hard. The one thing I’ll never be able to give up is travel, no matter how bad I know it is, but I try to do it deliberately: i drive only between destinations then mostly walk everywhere where I’m at, and I only fly to cross an ocean and stay as long as the visa will allow. But still…it’s too much…I’ll end up walking and hitching on container ships if I have to…it’s worth it.

@restlesslens Thanks for reading! It is difficult! Plastic is everwhere. I continue to use products wrapped in plastic bags like bread. But anything else, plastic tubs, bottles, etc, I pass on. It means my choices are much smaller. And cuts out access to all sorts of things completely. Container ships - yes! Perhaps a day will come when a more sane, fair and ecological cross-oceanic transport system is created. For the travel bugs!

@Denny Thanks so much for this conversation! Already I've resolved to use bar soap for dishwashing. I've saved the world! (no.) We bake some bread at home, and it occurs to me that the bakery at our grocery store packs its bread in paper bags. If not, possibly they'd sell us loaves without the plastic? Worth asking. As for airplanes & cross-oceanic transport, I'd be happy to see commercial flight disappear tomorrow. A more sane cross-oceanic system doesn't have to be created, it exists: ocean liners. That's how it was done until very recently.

@Denny I've recently been wrapped up in the American medical system and it has been a frightening reminder of the continued collapse of everything. The number of things and procedures that I heard them talk about not being able to do because of various shortages was boggling.

Not only do docs ans nurses not have the tools and medicines they’re used to, they don’t have the knowledge of alternatives.
