It breaks my heart a little when I drive through a historic neighborhood to see old houses bulldozed to make room for modern mansion monstrosities. I know a house is just a thing, but it feels like erasing a bit of history that mattered to someone.

@manton True, but where should we stop? The modern Paris millions of people love was built by a decree of a single ruler who decided to "bulldoze" the previous streets, and his contemporaries bashed him for this almost unanimously. Yet now it's one of the most popular tourist destinations.

@manton It's always stung a little bit that my dad's childhood home (which housed 11 kids in their very small town) was torn down to be a car lot.

@linnefaulk @manton Yup! There should probably be tax incentives for reusing existing construction.

@danielpunkass @linnefaulk @manton Here in the Netherlands demolishing companies are compelled by law to reuse building materials in order to comply to mandatory reduction of CO2 emission. And, of course, renovation is a thing, too.

@manton this is why I’m grateful for the many laws we have to protect old buildings in the UK. Renovate and restore but we can also sensitively add to the buildings to adapt them to modern life.

@manton It is the lack of imagination coupled with the lack of taste that’s soul crushing.
