Trying to understand the templating language behind micro∙blog is hurting my brain. I have really no idea how to tackle my problem of site navigation, where the previous post is out of scope of the current section—or the next post if the current post is last in its section. 👨‍💻

@renevanbelzen Don't be too hard on yourself. Getting into Hugo templates is nontrivial if you have no previous experience in web development. Hey, @manton, have you seen our question over at the Help Center? Would love your input there if you can find the time. 😊

@sod Thanks, I need to catch up on that thread!

@sod I'm really hampered by a lack of a desktop computer. Alas, I still can't rationalize such a device, maintaining it, replacing it post manufacturer support. It's way above my budget of €150 - €250 a year for electronics, incl. phone. Every time I did it, I went broke.

@renevanbelzen I hear you; being on a budget can be an exciting challenge indeed. 😅 But it's doable! We live in the era of dirt-cheap computing, after all.

Raspberry Pi 400 has more than enough computing power for web development and comes with a keyboard, mouse, power supply, and SD card. It will set you back like €109 and should last at least a couple of years. My first Raspberry Pi turns 9 this year and still boots up just fine. Your mileage may vary. 😉 Of course, you will need a monitor or TV to plug the computer into, as well.

And if you want to spend no money at all, there may still be alternatives out there. For web development, all you really need to get by is access to a web browser. Here in Sweden, you can walk into most libraries and use computers with internet access for free. There are also hackerspaces, cafes, and other communities that offer free or cheap access to computing power. Maybe you have similar options in the Netherlands?

@sod Alas, no tv, nor separate monitor. Same reason for not owning a desktop computer, too expensive to maintain. What's available to me is equipment people no longer want and dump into thrift stores, for short-lived, unsupported (unsave) afterlives.

Regarding libraries in NL, it's abysmal. You need a paid subscription to lend books, and with the cheaper plan, you need to pay for each book, and there are late fees. Services are nickled and dimed, not worth it, really, unless you have disposable income (and a mandatory subscription, BTW). AFAIK hacker spaces, etc., like libraries, are only free for under 19, paid for by 19 and up. Reading (and tinkering) clearly is considered for the privileged or youth; poor people are expected to vedge behind tv sets (which I don't own).

@renevanbelzen Hopefully, you could find a reasonable used TV from a thrift store without breaking your budget. If not, the Raspberry Pi is portable enough. Get some quality coding time when you visit family, friends, or any other place with a TV. 😉

I'm saddened to read about the barrier to access libraries in the Netherlands. To me, that's not how libraries should work. That said, OBA's PC plan at €17.50/year looks pretty reasonable. 1–3 hours daily access to a computer.

But again, it's super weird that you have to pay for that access. (Of course, as a taxpayer, I do pay for library access indirectly as they are publicly funded here.)

@sod Oh yes, in large cities, there’s enough demand for such projects. Where I live, a small town, most has been eroded away by failed plans from overzealous politicians with big-city-aspirations and the need to cut budgets because of those oversized projects. We even need charity and soup kitchens to keep dirt poor family (in debt) alive. It’s a shame things got out of hand so much.

@sod I suppose I can go spend some of the money I saved for leaner times, which are certainly ahead, judging by the effect of Covid (which has yet to reach its pandemic peak, if you'd ask me).

@renevanbelzen I don't want to encourage spending money you might need later. 😅 Please don't do that. My suggestions were all meant to fit comfortably inside the €150–250 yearly budget you gave (with room to spare for other electronics).

@sod I totally forgot, I saved €140 this month on food, by eating healthier. Raspberry Pi 4 EU kit ordered for tomorrow.

@renevanbelzen Hey, I'm happy for you. Both the healthier food and the computer. Just don't try to eat the Raspberry Pi if you get hungry. 😁

@sod I won't. It's for eating templates, raw, boiled or fully baked 🧑‍🍳 👌
