@mattball Great article. I vaguely thought account transfer was implemented but see now that it isn't. Makes me feel a little uncomfortable about my use of Mastodon.
@pyrmont Good post. You're not overthinking it. Identity (which is content ownership) is one of the 4 problems I wrote about solving in this post. Mastodon isn't really designed to tackle this.
@mattball I've not used Mastodon much past checking it out, but it seems that in all these instances you can use an RSS feed to follow a person. It doens't require an account on the specific network, and you get to read/follow in your familiar environment.
It still doesn't solve the problem of people moving, though. As for interacting, that would be easily solved cross-network with webmentions, but would require each system (mastodon, pixelfed, etc) to support them, but unfortunately may not be in their interest to do so. @manton
@manton This, exactly. All “ad-based businesses” are “at odds with user needs”. Fox News or Facebook, Twitter or the Times, the marketing may say “content” or “connecting people”, but the mission is selling ads.
@mattball One hope: If the protocols on which Mastodon & related are built into e.g. WordPress, you could follow people from your blog, even view in separate sub-feeds: /Pixel, /Mastodon, etc. People could even see who you follow. Own it all, for the price of a domain name.
@mattball That’s way too compressed. The point was that, if a developer or group of developers ever decided to integrate some fediverse functionality into blogging or CMS software, that would allow you to follow people in the fediverse from within your blog, or at a page on your site, kind of like a blog that is just updated from your blog roll. In other words, you would be following people from your very own domain name, viewing the syndicated content at your very own web page, instead of Mamot.fr or Mastodon.social or wherever. Hence, you (hypothetical person, not you, literally) would be able to follow people, AND PUBLISH, from your very own online ID: your domain name. (Who knows? Maybe someday we will give them out at birth, or when you’re old enough to vote.)
@manton if I’d want to stream now playing song info to micro.blog would it keep up with rss updates every 3-5 minutes? Or is there a better way.
@sander Yes, that should be fine. If you need it to update right away, there's also a way to notify Micro.blog. See the bottom of this help page.
